While mouth pi-petting may seem incomprehensible nowadays (though it still happens!) the first recorded lab infection occurred in 1893 when a physician inadvertently siphoned typhoid bacilli into his mouth. Big oops!

  1. I've seen people still doing this when they were in a hurry and a pipette bulb wasn't working right.

    And probably not the ethidium bromide... although I've seen people mouth-pipette acetone and diethyl ether. Bleh.
