Support Chief Raoni and the Kayapo tribe for their campaign to stop 400 dams being built in the Brazilian Amazon. The Kayapo people have been campaigning to stop the construction of  Belo Monte, the world's third largest dam being built in the Amazon Rainforest, where another 59 are planned, 5 already having been passed to go ahead....Brazil plans to build over 400 dams in the Rainforest by 2030!

Join the warriors of Raoni as this fight belongs to the world ! Stop  the Belo Monte Dam! Stop the Genocide of Indigenous People, Save the Rainforest and reclaim mother earth into caring loving hands.

"The Sky People have sent us a message, that they can take whatever they want, and no-one can stop them. Well, we will send them a message. You ride out as fast as the wind can carry you! You tell the other clans to come! Tell them Toruk Makto calls to them! You fly now, with me! My Brothers! Sisters! And we will show the Sky People that they cannot take whatever they want! And that this, This is our land!" - Jake Sully, from 'AVATAR'

They shout, they scream, they fight, they worry, they despair, they lose hope at times, but they never give up fighting to stop The Belo Monte Dam and to protect Mother Nature....and all the while, the World's Media does not care to give this urgent issue any attention.  Every person associated with the media carries a responsibility for what is going on right now,  we are all guardians of mother earth. Yet the media refuse to get involved! They refuse to report the truth about what is happening..They refuse to support the Indigenous People of the World and in doing so they are being complicit in what is happening here!.....It is hugely shaming to each and every one of them who has turned away without conscience

Originally shared by Green Impact International

Amazon covers 6.7 million square kilometers (2.6 million sq mi) across nine countries, made up of nearly 400 billion individual trees . These trees are estimated to produce about 20 percent of the world’s oxygen. It is estimated that 1 in 10 of all animal species lives in the Amazon rain forest. On top of that, just one hectare (2.5 acres) of the Amazon rain forest can contain up to 750 species of trees and 1,500 species of higher plants.Deforestation in the Amazon does have catastrophic effects for the whole planet. The Amazon holds about 90–140 billion metric tons of carbon, which is three or four times the amount released into the atmosphere each year.In fact, deforestation accounts for about 15 percent of annual global emissions, which is more than the transport sector of the entire world. And obviously, if the rain forest is leveled in the next 40 years, there will be considerably fewer trees to absorb the markedly higher levels of carbon in the atmosphere. And once those trees are gone, it can take hundreds of years for them to grow back, if that’s even possible. We are literally making the problem bigger while also reducing
our ability to address it.

Who's responsible for deforestation? New Forest 500 bares all

Who's responsible for deforestation? New Forest 500 bares all

- A new ranking by Global Canopy Programme paints a depressing picture of current efforts by those driving deforestation, but some good progress has been made, giving cause for optimism -

UK think tank Global Canopy Programme (GCP) has launched a first-of-its-kind platform that evaluates and ranks 500 organisations around the world which are responsible for the commodities that drive deforestation.

The study has uncovered a “depressing” picture of deforestation: Only seven companies scored top marks in implementing policies to protect forests and most governments are lagging behind, suggesting that the current global goal of halving forest loss by 2020 may just remain a pipedream.

The Forest 500 ranking is based on a study of 250 companies - with total annual revenue in excess of US$4.5 trillion – 150 investors and lenders, 50 countries and regions, and 50 other organisations.

Together, these 500 control pretty much the global supply chain of so-called ‘forest risk commodities’, including soya, palm oil, beef, leather, timber, pulp and paper.

More than US$100 billion of these goods are traded every year and they are found in more than half of packaged products on supermarkets’ shelves today.

“Overall we found a pretty depressing picture across all sectors, with some of those assessed, including all the hedge funds and sovereign wealth funds analysed, having no forest policies in place, despite their crucial influence over the future of our tropical forests,” GCP said.

Indonesia: Non-active Riau governor faces 20 years for palm oil plantation bribery

The Bandung Corruption Court tried non-active Riau Governor Annas Maamun on Wednesday for alleged involvement in bribery cases concerning the conversion of forests into oil palm plantations in his province.

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors charged Annas, who is also a former Rokan Hilir regent, for violating article 12(a) and (b) of Law No 31/1999 on corruption, which carry a maximum punishment of 20 years in prison.

“Annas received bribes worth a total of Rp5.5 billion (US$429,000) in the conversion of forests into oil palm plantations in Riau,” KPK prosecutor Irene Putrie told the court.

Irene said the 74-year-old governor had put oil palm plantations in Kuantan Singingi regency, in Bagan Sinnembah, Rokan Hilir regency and in Duri, Bengkalis regency into the proposed revision of Forestry Ministry Decree No 673/2014 dated Aug 9, 2014 on a change in the allocation of forest into non-forest areas.

Irene said the 1,188-hectare plantation in Kuantan Sengingi and a 1,214-hectare one in Bagan Sinembah belonged to Gulat Medali Emas Manurung, a member of Annas’ campaign team during his race to become governor for the 2014-2019 term in office, while a 120-hectare field in Duri belonged to employer Edison Marudut Marsadauli Siahaan.

“In fact, these areas are located outside the location recommended by the Riau Forestry Integrated Team,” Irene said. For this, according to Irene, through Gulat, Annas asked for Rp2.9 billion that he said would be spent to pay for 60 members of the House of Representatives’ Commission IV to speed up the approval process.

Before 1500 A.D., there were approximately 6 million indigenous people living in the Brazilian Amazon. But as the forests disappeared, so too did the people. In the early 1900s, there were less than 250,000 indigenous people living in the Amazon. Find out how you can help!
