
Trimethyl borate wildfire
Trimethyl borate is the organoboron compound with the formula B(OCH3)3. It is a colourless liquid that burns with a green flame. It is an intermediate in the preparation of sodium borohydride and is a popular reagent in organic chemistry.

It is stuff like this that get children into science. I'm sure multicoloured flames must be possible too, or at least alternating, i.e. red, green, blue.

ReplyDeleteSam Collett -- strontium nitrate, from automotive road flares, burns bright red, unsurprisingly. Sodium salts, orange/yellow. (likewise fuels that only partially combust, like acetylene or polystyrene, but that's for a different reason.)
