In 18th-century Madrid, a pregnant woman who was in labor was struck and killed by a carriage as she walked in front of the San Carlos Royal College of Surgery. When nobody knew her name or claimed her body, the surgeons at the school decided to use her corpse to learn anatomy. Handlers then created a mold from her body and filled it with wax, creating this striking sculpture that can still be seen today at the Complutense University School of Medicine.
