Isn't that great? I have been waiting for this! The Verge article has an awkwardly worded title. As the article says it wasn't the first grown lettuce. That went back to earth just to check and see if there was anything weird about it that would preclude human consumption. This is a later crop.
In Mary Roach's excellent book "Packing For Mars", discussing the technological challenges of flying astronauts to Mars, she mentioned early attempts on Skylab and Mir to grow vegetables for experiments, which went poorly because the astronauts ate them. Fresh, good food is rare up there.
