SpaceX makes landing a rocket look easy 👏
While I was up in the mountains, the Falcon 9 rocket blasted off on Sunday in an historic launch from a NASA pad, depositing a spacecraft into orbit before successfully returning to earth as Elon Musk's SpaceX moved to stake its claim to shuttling humans into space. It was the 8th successful landing (out of total 13) for SpaceX.
One day after suddenly scrubbing a planned lift-off a day earlier for undisclosed technical reasons, the company became the first private space firm to launch a rocket from a NASA facility. The mission is the private space company's 10th resupply to the International Space Station. The launch is the first time that SpaceX is using the LC-39A launchpad at the Kennedy Space Center since it leased it from NASA in 2014.

I wonder how many times it will be able to return and be relaunched again? I can imagine it would cost more than a disposable rocket (both in fuel and the more complex design), but ultimately be cheaper longer term.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine it is profitable for SpaceX at the current time, but expect the venture will pay dividends in the end.
Competition at the moment is probably just government space agencies, maybe more will come on board, especially if asteroid mining becomes appealing.
Very interesting Corina Marinescu
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing miss Corina....:-).....
ReplyDeleteSaw it live and it was a brilliant launch and the stage one landing was absolutely brilliant.
ReplyDeleteSam Collett I recall reading that Musk has said that after somewhere around 40 uses parts will need to be replaced but the engines themselves would be fine to keep reusing. I recall it that it said "indefinitely" with maintenance.
ReplyDeleteI don't have time to track down an official quote
