I remember getting an explanation of low-pressure zones (venturi effect) when I was in middle school. There was a science event taking place in the gymnasium, and a couple of local university students brought in a long, narrow (about 15cm diameter) plastic bag that spanned the entire gym. They asked how long we thought it would take to inflate, then claimed they could do it in about 10 seconds.
ReplyDeleteAfter the hubbub died down at this claim, one proceeded to stand at the open end, the other at the closed, and they held it fairly tight, then the one at the open end counted down, and the teacher held a stop watch. Upon reaching zero, the open-end guy took a breath, stepped back to just the right distance from the mouth of the bag exhaled through pursed lips into the bag. Of course, it instantly inflated from one end to the other in a grand total of 8 seconds. Then they proceeded to explain how the venturi effect works by producing a low pressure zone due to the restriction. I was hooked!
Anyway, that's pretty much what's happening here in the GIF, obviously. Yay science!!
Yep, I agree! It's one of my favourite phenomena in the world of fluid dynamics, and it plays a role in sooooo many basic and advanced machines, from pumps to wings to inflating a bag.
