Only ⅓ of American girls who are able to get the vaccine have done so, while Rwanda's vaccination rate is over 80%. Certain types of HPV cause cervical cancer in girls and throat cancer in boys. Officials from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention have attributed the decline to efficacy of the vaccine as well as herd immunity. Their next step will be to try to increase vaccination rates in the United States.
