Japanese researchers used skin cells of mice to make primordial germ cells (PGCs) that can produce both sperm and eggs. This breakthrough means scientists are now able to generate fertilizable eggs and healthy sperm from the skin cells of both men and women that can then be used in fertility treatments. The technique opens up a series of ethical questions, and scientists must now determine how to use these cells safely.
