Scientists at Vanderbilt University have identified a new compound that inhibits the COX-2 enzyme and may be useful for treating anxiety with fewer side effects.
These COX-2 inhibitors also activate the endocannabinoid system, according to new research published in Nature Neuroscience.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) work by inhibiting COX enzymes, and researchers knew that this inhibition could activate the endocannabinoid system. The new COX-2 inhibitors can activate this system but without switching on other systems like NSAIDs do. If these drugs work as expected in animal and clinical trials, they may be a novel way to treat mood and anxiety disorders, the researchers say.
