A Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) catching a Eurasian Minnow (Phoxinus sp.) from the perspective of the fish.

As it dives in to catch the fish (~25cm below the surface), its eyes are protected by a transparent third eyelid and it switches between its second foveae (they have two areas in their eyes with high densities of light receptors!) to compensate for the refraction of the water. So cool!

  3. We also have alligators and they have similar unique eye structure and amazing sensory makeup. In the evenings I will tap the water to mimic an animal in distress and they come to.the vibration. Fun but scarey!!
