Alfred Nobel

Alfred Nobel
I'm again late...sorry for that.

On December 10th 1896,  the Swedish chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel died in Italy aged 63.
He was the inventor of dynamite. Nobel held 350 different patents, dynamite being the most famous. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him.

He used his fortune posthumously to institute the Nobel Prizes.
He decided to begin the prizes because in 1888 when his brother died, a newspaper wrongly reported Alfred’s death instead. The newspaper published the obituary under the title: “The Merchant of Death is Dead”, going on to state: “Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday.” Nobel was therefore determined to be remembered in a better way, and wanted his name associated with the great prizes. The Nobel Prizes are awarded in physics, chemistry, medical science, economics, literature and peace.
