Interesting comment! You are right, there must have been some kind of processing because from space the Atlantis is equally far than the ground, so everything should have been equally in focus. Still impressive, though.
At a guess, I'd say Photoshop. The distances are very large for a physical process, and this would be a fairly simple masking and blurring job in the software.
