RIP Mikhail Kalashnikov (Nov. 10th, 1919 - Dec. 23rd, 2013) Mikhail Kalashnikov, designer of the fabled AK-47 automatic rifle which became a weapon of choice for guerrillas and governments the world over, died yesterday at age 94.

Sì certo, anche Nobel ha fato una forte accelerazione alla produzione di esplosivi anche bellici. Che la storia dell'Unione Sovietica abbia avuto bisogno anche di armi efficaci, non lo metto in dubbio. Ma questo nome è ormai legato al mercato delle armi e alla mondiale diffusione di questo terribile fucile mitragliatore terribile usata per perpetrare massacri ovunque.
Corina Marinescu that is true. But by empowering killers with cheap, efficient weapons, Mikhail just served as catalist for a great deal of violence in the world. A great mind like Kalashnikov should focus on things that promote wellbeing and not death.
So was Nobel with explosives...Mikhail at least didn't gain anything like Nobel. His design is remarkable even today, so for me is still a great designer. People died because of other interests and decisions of the other big fish...if it wasn't his gun perhaps would have been another one. So I don't wanna hear it...he was great at least for me.
I'm not sure I'd labels as killers those who used these "cheap, efficient weapons" to defend their families from oppressive regimes & people. There may be a kernel of truth to "people (not guns) kill people" since guns can be used offensively OR defensively....
Michael Atkinson yes said it like this doesn't sound good. At least for me, someone that kills another human being independently of their reasons is a killer. Many try to cover it up with flowers and pleasant music to look and sound good.
"Killer" is generally a put-down. Then you, and I, would be "killers" defending our families. Which is absurd, because that would be self-defense. Semantics. Merry Christmas.

Kalashnikov proved that the tightest engineering that works in a controlled environment doesn't do well in practical use (in the field). This aspect of engineering is applicable to most things made today. John Browning made significant strides to engineering also. Both designers are not credited very well for their contributions (as engineers) and I think this is short sighted.

Aveva qualche rimpianto per non aver creato qualcosa di meno sinistro, "come ad esempio un tagliaerba". Era fiero della sua invenzione ma ammetteva di essere dispiaciuto che fosse finita nelle mani di tanti terroristi e criminali comuni. L'Ak si è tramutato nella vera arma di distruzione di massa. Cifre empiriche stimano tra i 70 e i 100 milioni il numero di Ak in circolazione nel mondo.
It is sad when, in a given culture, police in order to defend they need to kill. In many countries they seem to do all right without killing. If police are killing as a norm then there is a serious underlying problem in that society that has not been addressed or people don't seem to be doing much effort to solve it; at least people should try to understand why it happens and not just accepted it with a happy face. Making better weapons will not solve the root cause in these trigger-happy cultures.

Mi sembra giusto, però, ricordare che lui stesso dichiarò il suo rammarico per non aver inventato qualcosa d'altro, dopo che la sua arma (ora diffusa in circa 100 milioni di esemplari!) è finita in mano a gangsters, terroristi, violenti di ogni genere. In molti paesi che ho visitato, il fucile Kalashnikov viene portato sulla spalla tutti i giorni, come fosse un orologio di marca. Purtroppo il nome Kalashnikov è diventato sinonimo di violenza e di prepotenza, cose che io non amo.
