26 May marks the anniversary of the crowning of Napoleon Bonaparte as King of Italy in 1805.

Napoleon, better known as the first Emperor of the French, was born in Corsica, his parents of noble Italian ancestry. After military training he came to prominence under the French First Republic and staged a coup d’etat, installing himself as First Consul in 1799. Five years later he declared himself Emperor.

Bonaparte had earlier taken part in the successful invasion of Italy and, after crowning himself Emperor of France in 1804, had himself crowned King of Italy at Milan Cathedral a year later. He retained the position until 1814 when he abdicated and was exiled to Elba.
