Wire-tailed Manakin

Wire-tailed Manakin
Wire-tailed manakin's natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical swamps.
Like other manakin species, wire-tailed manakins are deeply sexually dimorphic, with males sporting a brilliant red, black, and yellow plumage which they use to woo drab colored females.
Now...that's quite a sexy dance! :)

Nicolae Minovici: The Doctor Who Hanged Himself For Science

Nicolae Minovici: The Doctor Who Hanged Himself For Science
During the first decade of the twentieth century, while employed as a professor of forensic science at the State School of Science in Bucharest, Nicolae Minovici undertook a comprehensive study of death by hanging. Inspired by his research, he decided to find out, first-hand, what it would feel like to die in this way.

Minovici began his self-hanging experiments by constructing an auto-asphyxiation device: a hangman’s knot tied in a rope that ran through a pulley attached to the ceiling. He lay down on a cot, placed his head through the noose, and firmly tugged the other end of the rope.
The noose tightened, his face turned a purple-red, his vision blurred, and he heard a whistling. He lasted only six seconds before consciousness began to slip away, forcing him to stop.

For the next stage of his research, Minovici brought in assistants. He placed the noose around his neck, then the assistants pulled the other end of the rope with all their might, lifting him several metres off the ground. Immediately his eyes squeezed shut and his respiratory tract pinched close.

He signalled frantically to be let down. In this first effort, Minovici lasted only a few seconds in the air before having to signal to be let down, but with repeated practice he eventually managed to endure twenty-five seconds of swinging by his neck.

But one final experiment remained, hanging from the ceiling by a constricting hangman’s knot. Minovici tied the knot, again placed his head through the noose, and gave his assistants the signal.
They pulled. Instantly a burning pain ripped through his neck. The constriction was so intense that he frantically waved the men to stop. He had only endured four seconds, and his feet hadn’t even left the ground. Nevertheless, the trauma to his neck made it painful for him to swallow for an entire month

How do dogs “see” with their noses?
Did you know that dogs smell in stereo? The ability to smell separately - with each nostril - helps them determine from what direction smells come. This is just one of the many ways that dogs’ wonderfully developed noses make them so scent-savvy.

Today's quick lesson: Tardieu Spots

Today's quick lesson: Tardieu Spots
Asphyxial petechial haemorrhages do occur on the serosal surfaces of internal organs eg.heart as shown in the pictures. They were first described by Tardieu in the 19th century and were named after him as tardieu spots. Tardieu spots were considered at that time and for a long period after as pathognomonic signs of asphyxial deaths.

Such petechial haemorrhages do occur in deaths related  to infections, blood coagulopathy disorders and micro emboli. It can also occur due to rupture of engorged capillaries in the dependent parts. Tardieu spots can also be noticed in some cases of natural deaths, therefore, the confusing term of "suffocation haemorrages" should be avoided.

Wax anatomical model of a human head, Europe, 1801-1900
This wax model of a human head shows the internal structure of the brain, complete with its protective covering, the meninges, the eye, cheek, neck and jaw. Wax models were used for teaching anatomy to medical students or as part of popular anatomy shows. They were used to pick out and emphasize specific features of the body, making their structure and function easier to understand, especially at a time when few bodies were available for dissection. The model was donated by the Department of Human Anatomy at the University of Oxford to the Science Museum in UK.

Is Young Blood The Secret To Eternal Youth?

Is Young Blood The Secret To Eternal Youth?
New scientific research suggests that young blood might have rejuvenating properties for reasons no one quite understands yet. One study said that rejuvenating properties could be attributed to an unknown molecule.

The study, published in Nature Communications, found that young blood could heal broken bones and even enabled scientists to conjoin the circulatory systems of pairs of mice in a process called parabiosis. It was previously believed that a blood-borne molecule called GDF-11 circulates throughout blood was the fountain of youth. But recent studies contradicted these findings.

Another study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found that as mice aged, they had more of this molecule circulating in the bloodstream. And when researchers injected aging mice with this molecule, their muscles repaired themselves more slowly.

Before injecting yourself with baby mouse blood cells go ahead and read the full article ;)

The snake caterpillar uses a clever disguise to ward off predator

The snake caterpillar uses a clever disguise to ward off predator
The caterpillar cleverly camouflages itself as a slithering snake and comes with a head that looks like a snake. The snake caterpillar, in its larval state before becoming a moth, will also strike harmlessly if approached, just as a snake would, with the exception of a potential bite.

When disturbed the caterpillar pulls in its legs and head and expands the front part of its body, to take on the appearance of a serpent. The brown part, which appears to be the top of the snake's head, is actually the caterpillar's underside.

On the 29th May 1919 Albert Einstein's light-bending prediction is confirmed by Arthur Eddington

On the 29th May 1919 Albert Einstein's light-bending prediction is confirmed by Arthur Eddington
Einstein predicted that light should be bent by gravity. Sir Arthur Eddington lead an expedition to photograph the 1919 Total Eclipse of the Sun. The photographs revealed stars whose light had passed near to the Sun. Their positions showed that the light had been bent exactly as Einstein had predicted. The experiment was repeated in 1922 with another eclipse with the same confirmation.

The findings made Einstein a celebrity overnight, and precipitated the eventual triumph of general relativity over classical Newtonian physics.

Paramagnetism of liquid oxygen

Paramagnetism of liquid oxygen
Liquid oxygen sticks between the poles of a strong magnet until it boils away into its gas state. This is because it has unpaired electrons, which make each oxygen molecule a tiny magnet with a dipole. Normally, when oxygen is in a flask or in the air, these microscopic magnets point in all directions, cancelling out and meaning that there’s no net magnetic field. When it pours over the permanent magnet, the magnetic molecules all slightly align, creating an induced magnetic field, which reacts with the permanent magnet, making the oxygen stick to the poles. This is called paramagnetism.

Werner Theodor Otto Forssmann, a German surgical trainee in 1929, is famous for an experiment he performed on himself.
In 1929 Forssmann introduced the procedure of cardiac catheterization into medicine. He was struck by the danger inherent in the direct injection of drugs into the heart frequently demanded in an emergency.

The alternative that he proposed sounded no less alarming – introducing a catheter through the venous system from a vein in the elbow directly into the right atrium of the heart. Drugs could then be introduced through this.

After practice on cadavers and an unsuccessful attempt on himself made with the aid of a nervous colleague, Forssmann decided to do the whole thing himself.

He consequently introduced a 65-centimeter (25.6-in) catheter for its entire length, walked up several flights of stairs to the x-ray department and calmly confirmed that the tip of the catheter had in fact reached his heart. There had been no pain or discomfort.

He was fired after this stunt, but was awarded the 1956 Nobel Prize for Medicine for developing a procedure that allowed for cardiac catheterization.

26 May marks the anniversary of the crowning of Napoleon Bonaparte as King of Italy in 1805.

26 May marks the anniversary of the crowning of Napoleon Bonaparte as King of Italy in 1805.
Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.

Napoleon, better known as the first Emperor of the French, was born in Corsica, his parents of noble Italian ancestry. After military training he came to prominence under the French First Republic and staged a coup d’etat, installing himself as First Consul in 1799. Five years later he declared himself Emperor.

Bonaparte had earlier taken part in the successful invasion of Italy and, after crowning himself Emperor of France in 1804, had himself crowned King of Italy at Milan Cathedral a year later. He retained the position until 1814 when he abdicated and was exiled to Elba.

What could cause the center of M94 to be so bright?

What could cause the center of M94 to be so bright?
Spiral galaxy M94 has a ring of newly formed stars surrounding its nucleus, giving it not only an unusual appearance but also a strong interior glow. A leading progenitor hypothesis holds that an elongated knot of stars known as a bar rotates in M94 and has generated a burst of star formation in the inner ring. Recent observations have revealed the outer, fainter ring is not closed and relatively complex. M94, pictured here spans about 30,000 light years, lies about 15 million light years away, and can be seen with a small telescope toward the constellation of the Hunting Dogs (Canes Venatici).

Male seahorses undergo pregnancy and give birth to their sons and daughters.

Male seahorses undergo pregnancy and give birth to their sons and daughters.
Seahorses, which range from less than an inch to a foot (one to 30 centimeters) in length, have evolved a series of unusual adaptations—a prehensile tail for clinging to underwater vegetation, a tubelike mouth for sucking in tiny crustaceans, and protective bony plates in their skin.

The male seahorse has a pouch on its stomach in which to carry babies—as many as 2,000 at a time. A pregnancy lasts from 10 to 25 days, depending on the species.

The reproductive process begins when a male and a female seahorse do daily pre-dawn dances, intertwining their tails and swimming together. Eventually they engage in a true courtship dance, which can last as long as eight hours. It ends with the female depositing her eggs in the male's pouch.

Quantum tunneling refers to the quantum mechanical phenomenon where a particle tunnels through a barrier that it classically could not surmount. This plays an essential role in several physical phenomena, such as the nuclear fusion that occurs in main sequence stars like the Sun. It has important applications to modern devices such as the tunnel diode, quantum computing, and the scanning tunnelling microscope. The effect was predicted in the early 20th century and its acceptance as a general physical phenomenon came mid-century. Tunnelling is often explained using the Heisenberg uncertainty principle and the wave–particle duality of matter.

Crab lice, which are generally found in the pubic region of their human hosts, have claws on the tips of their legs that clamp around pubic hairs with great precision. Pulling off a crab louse will often leave the legs behind, still firmly attached to the hair.
These lice can also be found in armpit hair and eyebrows.
The lice suck blood, feeding five times a day. They spread through sexual contact and through bedding and clothing.

Pubic lice causes itching in the area covered by pubic hair. Itching often gets worse at night. The itching may start soon after getting infected with lice, or it may not start for up to 2 - 4 weeks after contact.
Pubic lice are best treated with a prescription wash containing permethrin, such as Elimite or Kwell.

Can drinking alcohol harm the child before the mother knows she is pregnant?

Can drinking alcohol harm the child before the mother knows she is pregnant?
Alcohol drunk by a mouse in early pregnancy changes the way genes function in the brains of the offspring, shows the recent Finnish study. The early exposure was also later apparent in the brain structure of the adult offspring. The timing of the exposure corresponds to the human gestational weeks 3–6 in terms of fetal development.

In addition, the exposure to alcohol was found to cause similar changes to gene function in other tissues of the infant mice. These results suggest that alcohol causes permanent changes to gene regulation in the first cells of developing embryo.

Exposure to alcohol during pregnancy may damage the child in many different ways, including learning disabilities as well as congenital deformities. The mechanisms through which alcohol impacts fetal development are not yet fully understood, and diagnosing the damage caused to the child is difficult.

In the mouse model where the dam drinks alcohol in early pregnancy, the offspring exhibit symptoms similar to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) in humans: decreased growth rate, similar structural changes to corresponding areas of the face and scull, and hyperactivity. The early exposure begins at conception and continues until the nervous system begins to develop. In humans, this corresponds to the first three or four weeks after conception in terms of development – a period during which the mother-to-be is often unaware of being pregnant.

SynDaver Patient

SynDaver Patient
A company called SynDaver develops synthetic human bodies for medical students to practice surgeries and other procedures on.

The bodies have their own automatic nervous system so that the patient can move its limbs, has a beating heart, dilating pupils, a warm body  and a chest that rises and falls as it breathes.

Students can cut into the synthetic human tissues using surgical knives and lasers to see the layers of skin, fat, muscles, tendons and bones .

Upgrade Your Brain: Liquid Hard Drive Implants Could Increase Intellect

Upgrade Your Brain: Liquid Hard Drive Implants Could Increase Intellect
Storing photos, documents and other files in brain-implantable liquid could one day be a reality after researchers discovered a new method of storing data in microscopic particles suspended in a solution.

This novel type of data storage, referred to as "wet computing", is able to make use of bio-compatible nanoparticles that could be used within - and in tandem with - the human body.

One practical application could be simply as a sensor. Nanoparticle clusters could be introduced into the bloodstream to detect, for example, glucose levels in order to assist diabetes sufferers.

Another implementation, which could potentially be realized within a few years, would be as "passive sensors". These could replace use-by-dates on food wrappers by signaling when food is spoiled by changing color.

Upward lightning primarily occurs when there is a nearby positive cloud-to-ground flash.

Upward lightning primarily occurs when there is a nearby positive cloud-to-ground flash. The electric field change caused by the preceding flash causes an upward positive leader to initiate from a tall object such as a building, tower or wind turbine. It is the shape of the tall object and the resulting enhancement in the electrical field that makes it possible for an upward leader to form following a nearby flash.

BRAIN-CONTROLLED BIONIC LEGS ARE FINALLY HERE

BRAIN-CONTROLLED BIONIC LEGS ARE FINALLY HERE
“Now, at age 48, Olafsson can move his ankle by thinking about it. When the electrical impulse from his brain reaches the base of his leg, a pair of sensors embedded in his muscle tissue connect the neural dots, and wirelessly transmit that signal to the Proprio Foot. Since the command reaches the foot before the wearer’s residual muscles actually contract, there’s no unnatural lag between intention and action."

NASA Released Tons of Free Software to the Public

NASA Released Tons of Free Software to the Public
NASA recently published the second annual Software Catalog, a free resource that contains tools used by some of the top scientists in the world. The programs that guide spacecraft into the outer reaches of the solar system and help the Curiosity rover traverse the surface of Mars can be yours at no cost. The tools are divided into 15 categories, including aeronautics. propulsion, and system testing and handling. The release of the software programs is the result of a 2011 White House memo that promoted the positive impact of sharing government agency research with the private sector.

Cytotoxic T cells

Cytotoxic T cells
A cytotoxic T cell  is a T lymphocyte (a type of white blood cell) that kills cancer cells, cells that are infected (particularly with viruses), or cells that are damaged in other ways.

There are billions of T cells within our blood – one teaspoon full of blood alone is believed to have around 5 million T cells, each measuring around 10 micrometres in length, about a tenth the width of a human hair. Each cell is engaged in the ferocious and unrelenting battle to keep us healthy.

The cells, seen in the animation as orange or green amorphous ‘blobs’ move around rapidly, investigating their environment as they travel. When a cytotoxic T cell finds an infected cell or, in the case of the animation, a cancer cell (blue), membrane protrusions rapidly explore the surface of the cell, checking for tell-tale signs that this is an uninvited guest.

The T cell binds to the cancer cell and injects poisonous proteins known as cytotoxins (red) down special pathways called microtubules to the interface between the T cell and the cancer cell, before puncturing the surface of the cancer cell and delivering its deadly cargo.

Animation:
The time-lapse footage was created by stitching together microscopic slices of the killer cells and their quarry, according to a written statement released by the University of Cambridge. It shows T cells (orange or green blobs) encountering cancer cells (blue blobs) and injecting them with lethal proteins known as cytotoxins (red).

Watch bees hatch right before your eyes in this stunningly clear time lapse that tracks the growth from larva to...

Watch bees hatch right before your eyes in this stunningly clear time lapse that tracks the growth from larva to pupa to the full grown bee. You can see the entire transformation from nearly transparent organisms that swim around in fluid to hairy bees with lots of color.

Development from egg to emerging bee varies among queens, workers and drones. Queens emerge from their cells in 15,16 days, workers in 21 days and drones in 24 days. Only one queen is usually present in a hive. New virgin queens develop in enlarged cells through differential feeding of royal jelly by workers.

When the existing queen ages or dies or the colony becomes very large a new queen is raised by the worker bees. The virgin queen takes one or several nuptial flights and once she is established starts laying eggs in the hive.

A fertile queen is able to lay fertilized or unfertilized eggs. Each unfertilized egg contains a unique combination of 50% of the queen's genes and develops into a haploid drone. The fertilized eggs develop into either workers or virgin queens.

The average lifespan of a queen is three to four years; drones usually die upon mating or are expelled from the hive before the winter; and workers may live for a few weeks in the summer and several months in areas with an extended winter.

Aortic Valve

Aortic Valve
The normal human heart contains 4 valves that regulate blood flow into and out of the heart. The aortic and pulmonic valves are known as the semilunar valves, whereas the tricuspid and mitral valves are referred to as the atrioventricular valves. All the valves are trileaflet, with the exception of the mitral valve, which has 2 leaflets. All 4 cardiac valves are surrounded by fibrous tissue forming partial or complete valvular rings, or annuli. These annuli join the fibrous skeleton of the heart to anchor and support the valvular structures.

The aortic valve is located between the left ventricular outflow tract and the ascending aorta.
The aortic valve functions to prevent the regurgitation of blood from the aorta into the left ventricle during ventricular diastole and to allow the appropriate flow of blood— the cardiac output —from the left ventricle into the aorta during ventricular systole. The aortic valve has 3 principle components: the annulus, cusps, and commissures.

This is a computer simulation of a supernova event, the moments when a massive star collapses in on itself to evolve into a neutron star. The violent and knobbly shock wave from the collapse expands out in a fraction of a second, with the coldest gas in the model colored blue and the hottest colored red. Ejected stellar material moves away from the core at speeds that can reach almost 19,000 miles per second.

The simulation was created in 2012 by the Simulating eXtreme Spacetimes (SXS) Project. Now, direct observations of a supernova called 1987A using NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array has confirmed a detail found in the model–that the collapse leads to a lopsided ejection of debris in one direction and the stellar core into another.
