Polar Bears & Climate Change

Polar Bears & Climate Change
A viral photograph taken of an emaciated polar bear is significant due to where the image was snapped, according to wildlife experts.

The extremely thin bear was spotted by photographer Kerstin Langenberger off the Barents Sea on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, which was once home to a thriving population of polar bears, but is now monitored by researchers who have observed extraordinary loss of sea ice due to global climate change.

  1. I think we are in a period of mass extinction, in large part due to humans encroachment on animal habitats and our wastefulness/pollution. There needs to be more Theodore Roosevelt like leaders, who take conservation seriously, unafraid of taking on the modern equivalent of the timber merchants

  2. This photo literally tears at my heart. But the question begs to be asked could this poor bear be very sick from natural causes or just very old? It warrants more being done to discover why the poor guy is in such dire straits, but let's not pin global warming on everything and thus lose credibility.

  3. Gary McPhail Mankind is not listening Gary and never will listen until things significantly impact its own way of life, which eventually it will.

  4. Mark Kilby Yes Mark, sad but true! And it will eventually happen, when the seas rise, when we loose beautiful creatures such as the Polar Bear, when our children ask, "Why aren't there any Polar Bears any more?"

  5. Humans are inherently selfish creatures, it takes effort to not be, but mutual interests can make things better. As green/renewable energy becomes cheaper, the potential will benefit all, even those who just seek a profit
