Milky Sea or mareel, is a condition on the ocean where large areas of seawater (up to 6,000 sq mi or 16,000 km2) are filled with bioluminescent bacteria or dinoflagellates, causing the ocean to uniformly glow an eerie blue at night.

Mariners have long told of rare nighttime events in which the ocean glows intensely as far as the eye can see in all directions.

Fictionally, such a "milky sea" is encountered by the Nautilus in Jules Verne classic "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."

Scientists don't have a good handle what's going on. But satellite sensors have provided the first pictures of a milky sea and given new hope to learning more about the elusive events.

The Witch Head Nebula

The Witch Head Nebula
Double, double toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble .... maybe Macbeth should have consulted the Witch Head Nebula. A suggestively shaped reflection nebula, this cosmic crone is about 800 light-years away though. Its frightening visage seems to glare toward nearby bright star Rigel in Orion, just off the right edge of this frame.

More formally known as IC 2118, the interstellar cloud of dust and gas is nearly 70 light-years across, its dust grains reflecting Rigel's starlight. In this composite portrait, the nebula's color is caused not only by the star's intense bluish light but because the dust grains scatter blue light more efficiently than red. The same physical process causes Earth's daytime sky to appear blue, although the scatterers in planet Earth's atmosphere are molecules of nitrogen and oxygen.

BLOOD a few facts

BLOOD a few facts
 - There are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate.

- Typically, two or three of these are produced from a pint of donated whole blood – hence each donation can help save up to three lives.

- Donors can give either whole blood or specific blood components only. The process of donating specific blood components – red cells, plasma or platelets – is called apheresis.

- One transfusion dose of platelets can be obtained through one apheresis donation of platelets or by combining the platelets derived from five whole blood donations.

- Most donated red blood cells must be used within 42 days of collection.

- Donated platelets must be used within five days of collection – new donations are constantly needed.

- Plasma and cryoprecipitate are stored in frozen state and can be used for up to one year after collection.

- Healthy bone marrow makes a constant supply of red cells, plasma and platelets. The body will replenish the elements given during a blood donation – some in a matter of hours and others in a matter of weeks.

The OGO - hands free wheelchair
A Segway rebuilt into a hands-free electric wheelchair with a top speed of 20km per hour is on the verge of mass production. The Ogo, built in a shed in New Zealand by Kevin Halsall, is based on Segway technology that enables the user to move intuitively, more precisely and hands-free.

The current version has the ability to swap out tyres for different terrains - ideal for an active user who wants to travel offroad. The hands-free feature also means that people can play sports or perform other tasks while moving.

IC 1871: Inside the Soul Nebula

IC 1871: Inside the Soul Nebula
This cosmic close-up looks deep inside the Soul Nebula. The dark and brooding dust clouds outlined by bright ridges of glowing gas are cataloged as IC 1871. About 25 light-years across, the telescopic field of view spans only a small part of the much larger Heart and Soul nebulae. At an estimated distance of 6,500 light-years the star-forming complex lies within the Perseus spiral arm of the Milky Way, seen in planet Earth's skies toward the constellation Cassiopeia. An example of triggered star formation, the dense star-forming clouds of IC 1871 are themselves sculpted by the intense winds and radiation of the region's massive young stars. This color image adopts a palette made popular in Hubble images of star-forming regions

How memories form and how we lose them

How memories form and how we lose them
Did you know that as we get older, the hippocampus loses 5% of its neurons every decade? That amounts to a total loss of 20% by the time we are 80 years old - which helps explain why our memories seem to fade.

One leading cause of chronic memory problems is stress. When we are constantly overloaded with work and personal responsibilities, our bodies are on hyperalert. This response has evolved from the physiological mechanism designed to make sure we can survive in a crisis. Stress chemicals help mobilize energy and increase alertness. However, with chronic stress our bodies become flooded with these chemicals, resulting in a loss of brain cells, and an inability to form new ones, which affects our ability to retain new information.
So take a break! And remember to thank yourself later.

Let’s look at how memories form in the first place. When you experience something – like dialing a phone number – the experience is converted into a pulse of electrical energy that zips along a network of neurons. Information first lands in short term memory where it’s available for anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. It’s then transferred to long-term memory through areas such as the hippocampus and finally to several storage regions across the brain. Neurons throughout the brain communicate at dedicated sites called synapses using specialized neurotransmitters. If two neurons communicate repeatedly a remarkable thing happens – the efficiency of communication between them increases. This process, called long-term potentiation, is considered to be a mechanism by which memories are stored long-term.

Heterochromia iridis is a genetic default when a living being has two different color eyes.

Heterochromia iridis is a genetic default when a living being has two different color eyes. Seen more often in dogs, cats and horses, it is a condition that may be present in humans as well, though not as often.

Dogs living with heterochromia generally have accurate canine vision, which is much different than that of a human’s vision. If an owner is wondering whether their dog suffers from partial blindness and is afraid or embarrassed to ask their vet, a simple sight test may be performed. Have someone sit behind the dog and cover one eye. Stand in front of the dog with a large colorful bouncy ball. Drop the ball, if the eye follows the ball the dog can see well enough. Switch eyes and try again.

This is an incredible looking “defect” that gives any dog a unique look about them. There is nothing physically wrong with the dog; nothing will develop in the future because of this genetic issue. Embrace the uniqueness of the dog and dispel the myths surrounding this genetic glitch.

Doomed Moon of Mars

Doomed Moon of Mars
This moon is doomed. Mars, the red planet named for the Roman god of war, has two tiny moons, Phobos and Deimos, whose names are derived from the Greek for Fear and Panic. These martian moons may well be captured asteroids originating in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter or perhaps from even more distant reaches of the Solar System.

The larger moon, Phobos, is indeed seen to be a cratered, asteroid-like object in this stunning color image from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, recorded at a resolution of about seven meters per pixel. But Phobos orbits so close to Mars - about 5,800 kilometers above the surface compared to 400,000 kilometers for our Moon - that gravitational tidal forces are dragging it down.

In 100 million years or so Phobos will likely be shattered by stress caused by the relentless tidal forces, the debris forming a decaying ring around Mars.

Eye-opening research suggests sleeping crocodiles still keep watch

Eye-opening research suggests sleeping crocodiles still keep watch
If you ever thought you could safely tiptoe past a sleeping crocodile, please reconsider – scientists have confirmed that the fearsome reptiles sleep with one eye open.

Researchers in Australia and Germany have discovered that crocodiles can deploy “unilateral eye closure” while dozing to keep a close eye on potential threats or prey.

It’s already known that birds, other reptiles and aquatic animals such as dolphins, seals and walruses have evolved unihemispheric sleep, which is when one half of the brain stays awake while the other shuts down. This allows the animals to keep one eye open to monitor events around them.

Until now, researchers have had only anecdotal evidence of this behavior in crocodiles, but a paper published in the Journal of Experimental Biology lends weight to the theory.

Oxytocin Enhances Pleasure of Social Interactions by Stimulating Production of “Bliss Molecule”

Oxytocin Enhances Pleasure of Social Interactions by Stimulating Production of “Bliss Molecule”
The hormone oxytocin, which has been associated with interpersonal bonding, may enhance the pleasure of social interactions by stimulating production of marijuana-like neurotransmitters in the brain, according to a University of California, Irvine study.

The research provides the first link between oxytocin – dubbed the “love hormone” – and anandamide, which has been called the “bliss molecule” for its role in activating cannabinoid receptors in brain cells to heighten motivation and happiness.

Deep Dive into Enceladus Plume

Deep  Dive into Enceladus Plume
On Oct. 28, 2015, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft will take the deepest dive ever through the plume of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. Scientists hope this close flyby will shed light on what’s happening beneath the moon’s icy surface. With a global ocean and likely hydrothermal activity, could Enceladus have the ingredients needed to support simple forms of life?

Charon and the Small Moons of Pluto

Charon and the Small Moons of Pluto
What do the moons of Pluto look like? Before a decade ago, only the largest moon Charon was known, but never imaged. As the robotic New Horizons spacecraft was prepared and launched, other moons were identified on Hubble images but remained only specks of light.

Finally, this past summer, New Horizons swept right past Pluto, photographed Pluto and Charon in detail, and took the best images of Styx, Nix, Kerberos, and Hydra that it could. The featured image composite shows the results -- each moon is seen to have a distinct shape, while underlying complexity is only hinted.

Even though not satisfyingly resolved, these images are likely to be the best available to humanity for some time. This is because the moons are too small and distant for contemporary Earth-based telescopes to resolve, and no new missions to the Pluto system are planned.

‘Spooky’ Asteroid to Fly by Earth on Halloween

‘Spooky’ Asteroid to Fly by Earth on Halloween
A roughly 1,300-foot-wide (400 meters) asteroid 2015 TB145, which some astronomers have dubbed “Spooky,” will cruise within 300,000 miles (480,000 kilometers) of Earth on Halloween (Oct. 31) — just 1.3 times the average distance between our planet and the moon (the asteroid poses no threat to Earth!).

The asteroid will be too faint to spot with the naked eye, but anyone who’s interested can get a look at the object (it may be some type of comet) online, thanks to live telescope views provided by the Slooh Community Observatory and the Virtual Telescope Project:

The Virtual Telescope Project will air a webcast at 8 p.m. EDT on Oct. 30 (0000 GMT on Oct. 31), while Slooh’s broadcast begins at 1 p.m. EDT (1700 GMT) on Oct. 31.

Saturn and Dione

Saturn and Dione
Saturn has many, varied moons – over 60 have been discovered so far. One of the larger ones, Dione, is shown here in this image from the Cassini orbiter, pictured as it moved across the face of its parent planet.

Dione orbits Saturn at around 377 400 km, roughly the same distance as that between Earth and the Moon. It has a diameter of around a third that of the Moon, and is just under 1.5 times as dense as liquid water. While the moon is thought to be mostly water ice, this higher density indicates that it must have a core of dense material – most likely silicates, the same kind of rock that makes up Earth’s mantle.

In this image, Dione is seen passing across the face of Saturn, a phenomenon known as a transit. The dark line cutting across the middle of the frame marks Saturn’s rings – these are not illuminated from this perspective, which was about 0.3º below the ring plane.

Transits occur when one celestial body passes in front of another. They are seen most often when moons pass in front of their parent planets, or planets (or even moons) in front of their parent stars. Transits are important events in astronomy, allowing observers to investigate the transiting body’s atmosphere and orbit in greater detail.

We can see a number of transits from Earth, such as when Mercury and Venus pass between the Sun and Earth, and show up clearly as black dots moving across the Sun’s bright disc.
Using powerful telescopes, we can also study more distant planets in other star systems as they pass in front of their stars.

Scientists rely heavily on transits in their hunt for and study of exoplanets. Dione orbits within Saturn’s magnetosphere, a region of space surrounding the planet that is filled with highly energetic atomic particles. These particles rain down on Dione and smash into its surface. Dione is too small with too little gravity to hold on to an atmosphere of its own, but this continuous high-energy bombardment releases molecules from the moon’s surface that form a thin, atmosphere-like layer. This tenuous atmosphere was discovered during two of Cassini’s close flybys of Dione, on 11 October 2005 and 7 April 2010.

Nectar-eating bats have evolved to use several methods to drink.

Nectar-eating bats have evolved to use several methods to drink. Some bats, like the Pallas’ long-tongued bat, use a lapping method. Hair-like papillae on the bat’s tongue increase the contact area with the nectar, helping to draw the fluid up in viscous globs as the bat repeatedly dips its tongue into the nectar.

The orange nectar bat, in contrast, has a tongue with a long central groove. This bat’s tongue stays submerged as it drinks. Researchers hypothesize that muscle action along the tongue, combined with capillary action in the narrow groove, allow the bat to actively pump nectar up to its mouth. It’s worth noting that the edges of the bat’s tongue do not curl around to touch, so the bat is definitely not using suction as one would with a straw.

Sonogenetics

Sonogenetics
It may sound like science fiction, but researchers at the Salk Institute and UC San Diego may have found a way to control the billions of neurons in our brain using ultrasound.

Through this approach called sonogenetics, they were able to activate specific brain cells in roundworms and influence their movements. The ability to manipulate neurons can give us more insight on brain circuits that may be associated with certain neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

Since ultrasonic waves can penetrate into deeper regions of the brain without disturbing other tissues and doesn’t require surgical implants, the procedure could help develop new and less invasive treatments for diseases. And there’s also the potential that sonogenetics may be used to control other types of cells in the body.

Thus far the technique has only been tested on animals, so researchers first need to develop safe ways to deliver ultrasound-sensitive channels to target cells in order for the technique to be used in humans.

Starburst Galaxy Messier 94

Starburst Galaxy Messier 94
Beautiful island universe Messier 94 lies a mere 15 million light-years distant in the northern constellation of the hunting dogs, Canes Venatici. A popular target for earth-based astronomers, the face-on spiral galaxy is about 30,000 light-years across, with spiral arms sweeping through the outskirts of its broad disk.

But this Hubble Space Telescope field of view spans about 7,000 light-years or so across M94's central region. The sharp close-up examines the galaxy's compact, bright nucleus and prominent inner dust lanes, surrounded by a remarkable bluish ring of young, massive stars. The massive stars in the ring are all likely less than 10 million years old, indicating the galaxy experienced a well-defined era of rapid star formation.

As a result, while the small, bright nucleus is typical of the Seyfert class of active galaxies, M94 is also known as a starburst galaxy. Because M94 is relatively nearby, astronomers can explore in detail reasons for the galaxy's burst of star formation.

Suzaku satellite reveals the average chemical composition of our Universe on the largest scales to be the same as that of our Sun
Aurora Simionescu of Japan's Institute of Space and Astronautical Science and her collaborators have used x-ray spectroscopy to determine the elemental abundances of the intergalactic plasma that pervades the Virgo cluster of galaxies. Their findings suggest that the average chemical composition of our Universe on the largest scales is about the same as the Sun's.

Antibiotic-Resistant Genes Found in Mummy

Antibiotic-Resistant Genes Found in Mummy
Genes associated with antibiotic resistance have been found in an 11th-century mummy’s colon and feces, long before antibiotics were introduced.

The find suggests that gene mutations responsible for antibiotic resistance occurred naturally in 1000-year-old bacteria and are not necessarily linked to the overuse of antibiotics.
The research, published in the online issue of PlosOne, began as an international team of scientists analyzed the microbiome of the remains that were mummified naturally in the cold climate of the Andes Mountains.

Found in Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca empire, the mummy was brought to Italy in the second half of the 19th century by professor Ernesto Mazzei. It was then donated to the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology of the University of Florence, Italy, where it is currently stored with 11 other mummies
