First Map Of Thawed Areas Under Greenland Ice Sheet

Combining different methods researchers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center were able to compile a first map of the thawed areas under Greenland's ice sheet. Red areas show where the ice is likely thawed on the bottom (43 percent of the ice sheet), and blue areas show where it is likely frozen (24 percent). Gray areas are where the thermal state is uncertain.

This information is important to understand how the ice sheet will react to further global warming as a thawed base reduces the friction between the ice sheet and the bedrock allowing for higher flow speeds.
