The Flight Deck of Space Shuttle Endeavour

The Flight Deck of Space Shuttle Endeavour
What would it be like to fly a space shuttle? Although the last of NASA's space shuttles has now been retired, it is still fun to contemplate sitting at the controls of one of the humanity's most sophisticated machines.

Pictured below is the flight deck of Space Shuttle Endeavour, the youngest shuttle and the second to last ever launched. The numerous panels and displays allowed the computer-controlled orbiter to enter the top of Earth's atmosphere at greater than the speed of sound and -- just thirty minutes later -- land on a runway like an airplane.

  1. I've got a very similar cockpit photo from a shuttle. Given to me as a 40" x 30" print. Hanging in my son Drew's bedroom.

  2. I used to play a Space Shuttle simulator in the early 1990's on my Amiga computer. Everything was accurately duplicated... cockpit, cargo bay, robot arm, etc. It was extremely difficult to play.

  4. It was interesting to see Endeavour, although I only saw the exterior, and other space memorabilia in LA's science museum. Much of what was used in the 'space race' probably wouldn't pass health and safety standards these days
