"Observations not only disturb what is to be measured, they produce it"
Today is the birthday of Pascual Jordan, one of the founders of quantum mechanics. He was born in 1902 in Hanover, Germany. He earned a PhD from the University of Göttingen in 1924. Jordan was a theoretical physicist who made several important contributions to the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics in the 1920s and 1930s.

He pioneered quantum field theory, which describes the behavior and interactions of subatomic particles. In 1933, despite enjoying numerous friendships and work collaborations with Jewish colleagues, Jordan joined the Nazi Party. During World War II he performed research for the Luftwaffe, Germany's air force, though the Nazis were somewhat suspicious of Jordan because of his ties to "Jewish physics." After the war he became a physics professor and later a conservative member of the Bundestag legislature in West Germany.
