“…the Saints are displayed in a cathedral in Eastern Germany close to the Czech border and were acquired in the 17th century when there was a big trade in relics. They are said to be the remains of Martyred saints that were stored in the catacombs of Rome before being removed and traded. They were reassembled and dressed in their fine regalia and displayed in ornate cabinets.”
Photographer Toby De Silvas’ shots from the “Immortal” series have a flat, painterly look to them that really make these skeletons appear to be perfectly captured works of hand-made art- but don’t be fooled: these are actual photos of the remains of (supposed) skeleton saints, propped up, dressed in incalculable wealth.

ReplyDeleteZombies got bling!!
ReplyDeleteI'm having a hard time believing what I'm seeing.
Isn't this some sort of desecration??!!
Very pretty desecration, but even so!
Ummm what part is hard to believe? the saints part?
ReplyDeleteDon't stress those were just regular humans =)
Just relics dressed like kings...I wonder who's the buffoon?
Not sure what to make of this, really. I get the feeling it's trying to make some sort of statement about earthly wealth and how little that has to do with how people are remembered.
ReplyDeleteWhat I see are some cool skeletons dressed up like kings... what can I say, I'm a creep =) I like skeletons, guts and brains =)
ReplyDeleteContrasting this to Greek art at least in how the human body and the clothes are viewed.
