Your left lung it’s a hero, it sacrifices space so that your heart can be somewhere in your body.

Your left lung it’s a hero, it sacrifices space so that your heart can be somewhere in your body. That space is called the “cardiac notch” which makes the left lung smaller than the right lung.
The cardiac notch is the lateral deflection of the anterior border of the left lung. It is produced to accommodate the space taken up by the heart.
That is also not the only difference, it also has two lobes compare to three lobes. Together, the lungs contain approximately 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) of airways.

The lava lake at Pu'u 'O’o.

The lava lake at Pu'u 'O’o. Love it. Lava rises up, quenches at the surface to a dark layer, and forms plates that slide around on the lava below and expand. You can even see the lava lake versions of triple junctions and transform faults if you look closely.

The Pu'u 'O'o vent is about 10 miles from the ocean at an altitude of about 3,000 ft. The lava pouring from the vent has a tendency to head for the ocean through a series of lava tubes. When the lava tubes become blocked, or shift, the lava works its way to the surface and can be seen as surface flows.

The Rufous-bellied Kookaburra has a white bill, and black cap. Its wings are multi-colored and tinged with blue, and its belly and tail feathers are a pale rufous. Its large, square head holds a long beak. The body is stout, and there is a white band around the neck. They are sexually dimorphic, with the males exhibiting a mix of blue shades on the tail feathers, while the females display a pale rufous color on the belly and tail feathers.

The Rufous-bellied Kookaburra lives in pairs, not in family groups as is typical of other Kookaburras. Both parents incubate and feed the chicks.

Seasonal Streaks Point to Recent Flowing Water on Mars

Seasonal Streaks Point to Recent Flowing Water on Mars
What creates these changing streaks on Mars? Called Recurring Slope Linea (RSL), these dark features start on the slopes of hills and craters but don't usually extend to the bottom. What's even more unusual is that these streaks appear to change with the season, appearing fresh and growing during warm weather and disappearing during the winter.

After much study, including a recent chemical analyses, a leading hypothesis has emerged that these streaks are likely created by new occurrences of liquid salty water that evaporates as it flows. The source for the briny water is still unclear, with two possibilities being condensation from the Martian atmosphere and underground reservoirs. An exciting inference is that if these briny flows are not too salty, they may be able to support microbial life on Mars even today.

Who is Pepper?

Who is Pepper?
The latest creation from Aldebaran, Pepper is the first humanoid robot designed to live with humans. At the risk of disappointing you, he doesn't clean, doesn't cook and doesn't have super powers... Pepper is a social robot able to converse with you, recognize and react to your emotions, move and live autonomously.

Engaging and friendly, Pepper is much more than a robot, he’s a companion able to communicate with you through the most intuitive interface we know: voice, touch and emotions.

At the Clinton Global Initiative on Monday, Pepper joined Tyson on stage at “The Future of Global Impact” conference, to tell attendees a bit about itself and share a tender embrace with the renowned astrophysicist.

Tiny lasers from living cells

Tiny lasers from living cells
NSF-funded researchers have discovered a way to turn biological cells into microscopic lasers.
Scientists at Harvard Medical School, in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital, invented a new type of laser made of live biological cells.

The researchers have also for the first time implanted a microscopic laser into a single cell.
By injecting cells with a mixture of oil (or fat) combined with a fluorescent dye, cells develop the ability to reflect or amplify light when activated. Thus creating a laser.

Study adds to evidence that viruses are alive

Study adds to evidence that viruses are alive
A new analysis supports the hypothesis that viruses are living entities that share a long evolutionary history with cells, researchers report. The study offers the first reliable method for tracing viral evolution back to a time when neither viruses nor cells existed in the forms recognized today, the researchers say.

The new study focused on the vast repertoire of protein structures, called “folds,” that are encoded in the genomes of all cells and viruses. Folds are the structural building blocks of proteins, giving them their complex, three-dimensional shapes. By comparing fold structures across different branches of the tree of life, researchers can reconstruct the evolutionary histories of the folds and of the organisms whose genomes code for them.

ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft has provided evidence for a daily water-ice cycle on and near the surface of comets.

ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft has provided evidence for a daily water-ice cycle on and near the surface of comets.

Comets are celestial bodies comprising a mixture of dust and ices, which they periodically shed as they swing towards their closest point to the Sun along their highly eccentric orbits.

As sunlight heats the frozen nucleus of a comet, the ice in it – mainly water but also other ‘volatiles’ such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide – turns directly into a gas.

This gas flows away from the comet, carrying dust particles along. Together, gas and dust build up the bright halo and tails that are characteristic of comets.

Catatumbo lightning refers to continuous (high frequency) lightning from a near-daily thunderstorm complex that forms in the Lago de Maracaibo/Catatumbo River region in northern Venezuela, South America.

The only apparent unique characteristic of this phenomenon is that the storms form and persist in the same place night after night. The storms form with enough reliable frequency - as many as half of the nights per year - that they have historically been used as a maritime navigational aid.

'Tree of life' for 2.3 million species released
Scientists have released a new version of the tree of life, showing everything we know about how the living things of Earth are related to one another. With 2.3 million species and counting, it's the most complete model of its kind — but there's a lot more work to do.
Like evolution itself, this diagram will continue to evolve as scientists fill in gaps and uncover more detailed information on the genetic relationships of Earth’s various species.

The Local Fluff

The Local Fluff
The stars are not alone. In the disk of our Milky Way Galaxy about 10 percent of visible matter is in the form of gas, called the interstellar medium (ISM). The ISM is not uniform, and shows patchiness even near our Sun. It can be quite difficult to detect the local ISM because it is so tenuous and emits so little light.

This mostly hydrogen gas, however, absorbs some very specific colors that can be detected in the light of the nearest stars. A working map of the local ISM within 20 light-years, based on ongoing observations and recent particle detections from the Earth-orbiting Interstellar Boundary Exporer satellite (IBEX), is shown in this image. These observations indicate that our Sun is moving through a Local Interstellar Cloud as this cloud flows outwards from the Scorpius-Centaurus Association star forming region. Our Sun may exit the Local Cloud, also called the Local Fluff, during the next 10,000 years.

Much remains unknown about the local ISM, including details of its distribution, its origin, and how it affects the Sun and the Earth. Unexpectedly, recent IBEX spacecraft measurements indicate that the direction from which neutral interstellar particles flow through our Solar System is changing.

Octohocus Pocus - now you see it, now you don't.
Scientists at the University of Melbourne first spotted this unusual behavior during a night dive in Port Philip Bay, Australia, in 2008. According to New Scientist, after shining a light on a southern sand octopus, the frightened specimen began to shoot jets of water into the sand below, creating a pit of quicksand into which it buried its entire body.

According to recently published research, this is the first time a cephalopod has been observed forming a complete burrow beneath the sand.

Smallest 3-D Camera Offers Brain Surgery Innovation

Smallest 3-D Camera Offers Brain Surgery Innovation
To operate on the brain, doctors need to see fine details on a small scale. A tiny camera that could produce 3-D images from inside the brain would help surgeons see more intricacies of the tissue they are handling and lead to faster, safer procedures.

An endoscope with such a camera is being developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. MARVEL, which stands for Multi Angle Rear Viewing Endoscopic tooL, has been honored with the Outstanding Technology Development award from the Federal Laboratory Consortium. An endoscope is a device that examines the interior of a body part.

MARVEL’s camera is a mere 0.2 inch (4 millimeters) in diameter and about 0.6 inch (15 millimeters) long. It is attached to a bendable “neck” that can sweep left or right, looking around corners with up to a 120-degree arc. This allows for a highly maneuverable endoscope.
Operations with the small camera would not require the traditional open craniotomy, a procedure in which surgeons take out large parts of the skull. Craniotomies result in higher costs and longer stays in hospitals than surgery using an endoscope.

HERACLES

HERACLES
ESA is inviting university students around the world to compete in designing a mission scenario for the next step in space exploration: a human–robotic partnership for exploring the Moon.

The “Human-Enhanced Robotic Architecture and Capabilities for Lunar Exploration and Science”, or Heracles, study describes an ESA-led mission that aims for the next steps in lunar exploration.
One of the main objectives is to examine human–robotic partnerships – the interaction between crew and automated systems considered to be a promising aspect of future space exploration missions.

The Agency invites university students from around the world to submit their proposals as part of the symposium, ‘Moon 2020–2030: A New Era of Human and Robotic Exploration’, set for 15-16 December at ESTEC, Noordwijk, the Netherlands.
The winning submissions will be assessed by ESA for their utility in possible future studies of mission scenarios

In this remote village, some boys don’t grow a penis until they’re 12

In this remote village, some boys don’t grow a penis until they’re 12
As covered by Michael Mosley in the new BBC series, Countdown to Life: The Extraordinary Making of You, the remarkable case of the Guevedoces is a condition that affects just over 1% of the boys born in Salinas, a remote village lying in the southwest of the Dominican Republic.

Guevedoces (literal translation “penis at 12”) appear to be completely female at birth and are brought up to be little girls.
“When they’re born, they look like girls with no testes and what appears to be a vagina,” writes Mosley for The Telegraph. “It is only when they near puberty that the penis grows and testicles descend.”

At conception we all inherit a set of genes from our parents that will, in time instruct our bodies to make us male or female. But for the first few weeks of our lives human embryos are neither. Instead we have a protrusion called a tubercle. If you’re genetically male the Y chromosome instructs the gonads to become testicles. They also send testosterone to the tubercle, where it is converted into a potent hormone called dihydro testosterone This transforms the tubercle into a penis. If you’re female and don’t make dihydro testosterone then your tubercle becomes a clitoris.

When Dr Imperato investigated the Guavadoces she discovered the reason they don’t have male genitalia at birth is because they are deficient in an enzyme called 5 -α -reductase, which normally converts testosterone into dihydro-testosterone. So they appear female when they are born, but around puberty, when they get another surge of testosterone, they sprout muscles, testes and a penis.

Discovery of a triple barrier that prevents cells from becoming cancerous

Discovery of a triple barrier that prevents cells from becoming cancerous
Cell proliferation requires the chromosomes to be copied (replicated) and distributed (segregated) to the two future daughter cells. Cells continually undergo spontaneous alterations (injuries) to the DNA that makes up the chromosomes, because of their aqueous (reactive) environment, for example. In response to DNA injuries, cells put a stop to the cell division cycle, in order to allow time for the injuries to be repaired and prevent the transmission of damaged, incompletely replicated chromosomes. The loss of this capacity leads to the onset of chromosomal instability, a driver of cancerous transformation.

Lunar Eclipses

Lunar Eclipses
Like I said a while ago...starting on the night of September 27th, 2015 a supermoon lunar eclipse will occur.

Lunar eclipses occur when the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, however, for a total lunar eclipse to occur the Moon and Earth have to be on the same orbital plane with the Sun – this is known as a syzygy. During a total lunar eclipse the Moon travels completely into the Earth’s shadow (umbra). Even though the Moon is immersed in the Earth’s shadow, indirect sunlight will still reach the Moon.

As sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere it gets absorbed and then radiated out (scattered). The atmosphere filters out most of the blue-colored light. What’s left over is the orange- and red-colored light. From the Moon’s perspective the Earth’s edge appears to glow bright orange or red. This red-colored light passes through our atmosphere without getting scattered, projecting indirect, reddish light onto the Moon.

Animation:
Although you're standing on the moon in the first animation bellow witnessing a solar eclipse, you can still pick out the different stages of the lunar eclipse that your fellow Earthlings will see.

If the people of Europe had known as much of astronomy and geology when the bible was introduced among them, as they do now, there never could have been one believer in the doctrine of inspiration. If the writers of the various parts of the bible had known as much about the sciences as is now known by every intelligent man, the book never could have been written. It was produced by ignorance, and has been believed and defended by its author. It has lost power in the proportion that man has gained knowledge. A few years ago, this book was appealed to in the settlement of all scientific questions; but now, even the clergy confess that in such matters, it has ceased to speak with the voice of authority. For the establishment of facts, the word of man is now considered far better than the word of God. In the world of science, Jehovah was superseded by Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. All that God told Moses, admitting the entire account to be true, is dust and ashes compared to the discoveries of Descartes, Laplace, and Humboldt. In matters of fact, the bible has ceased to be regarded as a standard. Science has succeeded in breaking the chains of theology. A few years ago, Science endeavored to show that it was not inconsistent with the bible. The tables have been turned, and now, Religion is endeavoring to prove that the bible is not inconsistent with Science. The standard has been changed.

Spiral Galaxy M96 from Hubble

Spiral Galaxy M96 from Hubble
Dust lanes seem to swirl around the core of Messier 96 in this colorful, detailed portrait of the center of a beautiful island universe. Of course M96 is a spiral galaxy, and counting the faint arms extending beyond the brighter central region, it spans 100 thousand light-years or so, making it about the size of our own Milky Way. M96, also known as NGC 3368, is known to be about 35 million light-years distant and a dominant member of the Leo I galaxy group.

The reason for M96's asymmetry is unclear -- it could have arisen from gravitational interactions with other Leo I group galaxies, but the lack of an intra-group diffuse glow seems to indicate few recent interactions.

Crab Supernova explosion happened in 1054, and its evolution into the remnant it is now - called the Crab Nebula.
Modern understanding that the Crab Nebula was created by a supernova, an explosion of a massive supergiant star, dates to 1921 when Carl Otto Lampland announced he had seen changes in its structure.

This eventually led to the conclusion that the creation of the Crab Nebula corresponds to the bright SN 1054 supernova recorded by Chinese astronomers in AD 1054. There is also a 13th-century Japanese reference to an appearance of a new or “guest” star in Meigetsuki. It was then so bright it was visible during the daytime for 23 days.

Flamingo Tongue Snail

Flamingo Tongue Snail
Common on many Caribbean and Atlantic coral reefs, the flamingo tongue snail feeds on toxic sea fans and not only suffers no harm, it incorporates the fans' venom and becomes toxic itself. Shell collectors are often attracted to the colorful snails, but in fact the shell itself is white—it’s only the living animal inside that produces the striking color pattern.

The Flamingo Tongue Snail, Cyphoma gibbosum, is a member of the phylum Mollusca, which also contains octopus, oysters and chitons.
