Caution with Calcium Supplements
After analyzing results of 10 years of medical tests on more than 2,700 people in a federally funded heart disease study, researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine and elsewhere conclude that taking calcium supplements may raise the risk of clogged arteries and heart damage, although a diet high in calcium-rich foods appears have the opposite effect.
“When it comes to using vitamin and mineral supplements, particularly calcium supplements being taken for bone health, many Americans think that more is always better,” says Erin Michos, MD, MHS, associate director of preventive cardiology at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
“But our study adds to the body of evidence that excess calcium in the form of supplements may harm the heart and vascular system.”

I do think it is better to have foods with minerals and vitamins naturally rather than use supplements. Except maybe in certain situations (pregnancy perhaps), I'm somewhat sceptical about benefits of taking lots of supplements

Calcium is deposited in plaque as part of the atherosclerosis process, Michael Thomas .
ReplyDeleteIt might be obvious to some, but to a big majority is not.
