I love hugs, they are great for cheering me up, but I also love holding hands. That moment when your hand finds theirs and your nervous system is going into overdrive with tactile sensation and your hands just come together and clasp. Even thinking about it now is making me smile.
Sean Walker same in return! :) I love the word "togetherness." This inevitably reminds me Corina Marinescu 's ideas about the lobe extension. We definitely would benefit from it.
Corina Marinescu me too, but if we were to connect like our left and right brain hemispheres are connected, it wouldn't feel like being in a crowd, would it? I personally don't feel like I would be 2 people, I pretty much feel like 1, even though I have two hemispheres of my brain...
Captain Jack Ever the dissenting voice aren't you? Do you really think it is entirely 'hog wash'? Don't you think it's likely that hugging has a positive emotional impact on people? The claims about depression, anxiety and immune system would all follow from that.
Captain Jack this is true because of the cuddling hormone ;) and I was referring strictly to humans. But since you're in some strange sharky waters and like to assume things....here it is some nice cuddling assumption " ..in the absence of a cat, I’d consider cuddling with a synthetic fur coat. Especially if your dead grandma was wearing it" ;)
If I may, so often we question faith, we question science and say “show me…just show me!” Here right in front of us, in front of everyone who has ever hugged and been hugged for a myriad of different reasons in a million different places is the best “Show Me” evidence one can ever hope to see, feel, hear, taste and smell… it satisfies all senses. It without question floods the body with the glorious endorphins to create a sense of well being that it is simply overwhelming, undeniable bliss... You want proof, here is photographic realism in holographic physical reality… you will never have better proof.
And, and, this gift, one of humankind’s greatest gifts… is FREE, non-fattening and it’s legal. So naysayers… go back to your singular dismal gray lives and ignore if you choose… me, I choose to believe and will leap toward this experience, this nirvana based in reality every chance I get!
Doing some research I was able to find out what this cuddling hormone is. Appropriate name is Oxytocin and is a peptide of nine amino acids. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxytocin It seems we know little about this peptide. The studies tend to sway toward correlation is too causation which is just bad science. The studies do show that this peptide is involved in many emotions and body functions. Exactly what it's doing or how it's influencing our body is still unknown. If you read further in wiki, you'll find that Oxytocin isn't all a bed of roses. It has it's darker side. One that might end with you in prison or dead. Like yen and yang, balance is key. To much of a good thing could be bad. That is, if Oxytocin is really in charge.
Captain Jack I do appreciate some of your opinions regardless different subjects....but is not the case now. This post is not a peer review, this was no more than a "tao line" on a pillow. Obviously cuddling is not gonna cure your depression, but in that moment is gonna make you forget about all that dark thoughts; Obviously is not gonna fix your anxiety but is gonna make your mind stay still and wrap you with nice comfortable thoughts; Obviously is not gonna cure your flu but for sure is gonna make you feel better. And for the sake of conversation I'm not interested in what journalists think about cuddling and oxytocin and for sure you can't really teach me anything about oxytocin.
I bet it does. Better with a person though
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely =)
ReplyDeleteHm! I'm certainly deprived of it... and though I don't feel anxious or depressed, I get the point. It could be better.
ReplyDeletelol, virtual (platonic) hug Mindey I.!

ReplyDeleteYep spine pinching

ReplyDeleteTogetherness? Mindey I. that sounds like an orgy...I hate crowds.
ReplyDeleteI stay away from crowds when I can, rather be out in the countryside
ReplyDeleteOr a beach, top of the mountain...
ReplyDeleteI live by the beach, the air and the open space is great (likewise on a mountain)

ReplyDeleteI say Hog Wash. Sources? =)
ReplyDeleteNo wonder I'm so healthy :)

ReplyDeleteThat just gave me a new pick up line.
ReplyDelete+Sean Walker If this theory was true then you could cuddle with two sharks and reduce your anxiety, depression and improve you immune system. http://m.flickr.com/photos/60897922@N05/7813424070/lightbox/

ReplyDeleteI wonder if there have been many scientific studies on cuddling...

I wonder, does cuddling also cause the release of oxytocin?
