It's a 2-d image of a 3-d projection of an object rotating in 4-d. In particular, the 24-cell is an analogue of the octahedron, one dimension higher, in the same way that a cube is an analogue of a square, one dimension higher. So there are actually not more than 4 dimensions relevant here.
