The lined leaf tail gecko camouflages itself to resemble new leaf bark as a defense mechanism against predators.

The lined leaf tail gecko camouflages itself to resemble new leaf bark as a defense mechanism against predators.
The first thing that comes to mind when observing lined leaf-tailed geckos is how different they are from other leaf-tails. Overall color and pattern are much more regular than the more common leaf-tails. Body color can be a uniform tan with little patterning or alternating light and dark lines (hence the geckos common name).

Legs are long and thin without the fringe of skin that breaks up the outline of other leaf-tailed geckos. Lined leaf-tails have a more elongated and cylindrical body with a tail resembling a dead bamboo leaf. These unique characteristics may be the result of the gecko evolving in a different microhabitat.

Juno Approaching Jupiter

Juno Approaching Jupiter
Approaching over the north pole after nearly a five-year journey, Juno enjoys a perspective on Jupiter not often seen, even by spacecraft from Earth that usually swing by closer to Jupiter's equator. Looking down toward the ruling gas giant from a distance of 10.9 million kilometers, the spacecraft's JunoCam captured this image with Jupiter's nightside and orbiting entourage of four large Galilean moons on June 21.

JunoCam is intended to provide close-up views of the gas giant's cloudy zoned and belted atmosphere and on July 4 (July 5 UT) Juno is set to burn its main engine to slow down and be captured into its own orbit. If all goes well, it will be the first spacecraft to orbit the poles of Jupiter, skimming to within 5,000 kilometers of the Jovian cloud tops during the 20 month mission.

Exotic particles with four or more quarks

Exotic particles with four or more quarks
Researchers at the LHC say they have discovered four new subatomic particles that are each made up of four quarks. Protons and neutrons are made of three quarks; lots of other particles are made of two. That's what makes the new "tetraquarks," and others like them that have been discovered recently, so strange. This article describes the six varieties of quarks and explains why they usually prefer to combine into pairs or triplets rather than quartets.

Read the article:
http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/magazine/physicstoday/article/67/9/10.1063/PT.3.2525

Photo:
Conventional and exotic quark combinations.
(a) Three differently colored quarks form baryons such as the proton; three antiquarks combine to form antibaryons. Quarks couple with antiquarks of the corresponding anticolor in mesons such as the pion.

(b) Combining two quarks of different colors produces anticolored diquarks.

(c) Any number of quarks can combine to form a particle as long as the resulting color is white. Examples are pentaquark baryons, dibaryons, and tetraquark mesons. In such cases, “baryon” means that the number of quarks minus the number of antiquarks is three, and “meson” means that quarks and antiquarks appear in equal number.

Prefixes like “penta” or “tetra” refer to the total amount of quarks and antiquarks, without distinction. (d) In 2007 the Belle collaboration at KEK studied the reaction B → Kπ + ψ′. The plot here shows the invariant mass (defined in the text) of the π + ψ′ products; the peak indicates that those products arose from the decay of an intermediate Z meson, as illustrated in the inset, and the nature of the products suggests that the Z is a four-quark state.

Rosa Bonheur (French, 1822-1899) - ‘The Highland Shepherd’, 1859

Rosa Bonheur (French, 1822-1899) - ‘The Highland Shepherd’, 1859
Rarely during the nineteenth century did the artistic career and recognition of a woman eclipse that of her male counterparts. History recognizes few females from this period in the position of artistic authority, but Rosa Bonheur established herself as the foremost “animalier,” or animal painter, linked with landscape painting and the Realist tradition.

Through contacts, exhibitions, and reproductions disseminated worldwide, Rosa Bonheur’s work was well known throughout Europe and America. Her unusual ways attracted considerable public attention and she harnessed this interest throughout her life and established a niche, commercially and artistically, for her work, becoming one of the most original figures of the 19th century.

The New World Atlas of Artificial Sky Brightness

The New World Atlas of Artificial Sky Brightness
How far are you from a naturally dark night sky? In increasing steps, this world map shows the effect of artificial night sky brightness on the visual appearance of the night sky. The brightness was modeled using high resolution satellite data and fit to thousands of night sky brightness measurements in recent work.

Color-coded levels are compared to the natural sky brightness level for your location. For example, artificial sky brightness levels in yellow alter the natural appearance of the night sky. In red they hide the Milky Way in an artificial luminous fog. The results indicate that the historically common appearance of our galaxy at night is now lost for more than one-third of humanity. That includes 60% of Europeans and almost 80% of North Americans, along with inhabitants of other densely populated, light-polluted regions of planet Earth.

All the Water on Europa

All the Water on Europa
How much of Jupiter's moon Europa is made of water? A lot, actually. Based on the Galileo probe data acquired during its exploration of the Jovian system from 1995 to 2003, Europa possesses a deep, global ocean of liquid water beneath a layer of surface ice.

The subsurface ocean plus ice layer could range from 80 to 170 kilometers in average depth. Adopting an estimate of 100 kilometers depth, if all the water on Europa were gathered into a ball it would have a radius of 877 kilometers.

To scale, this intriguing illustration compares that hypothetical ball of all the water on Europa to the size of Europa itself (left) - and similarly to all the water on planet Earth. With a volume 2-3 times the volume of water in Earth's oceans, the global ocean on Europa holds out a tantalizing destination in the search for extraterrestrial life in our solar system.

Why we are attracted to certain people of the opposite sex?

Why we are attracted to certain people of the opposite sex?
There’s a reason why we are attracted to certain people of the opposite sex.  According to evolutionary psychology, what we want is healthy mates.  Beauty, for example, is a way in which we have of judging the health of another person.  The theory says, for example, that if you are at a bar on Friday night and you want to “pick up” somebody rapidly, you can’t do a blood test.  You can’t do a physical examination to find out how healthy that person is, so you need markers.

According to evolutionary psychology, the markers are for estrogen and testosterone - shown in the body by beauty and physical health.  For example, estrogen has estrogen markers: large eyes, small chin and thick lips. Same thing with testosterone: testosterone makes large necks and strong jaws and a lower voice. That also means the person is fit; the person is healthy. These are markers that we use.

Sublimation is a transition directly from a solid phase to a gaseous one.

Sublimation is a transition directly from a solid phase to a gaseous one. Given typical Earth atmospheric conditions, one of the most commonly observed examples of sublimation is that of solid carbon dioxide, aka dry ice. Submerging dry ice in water both speeds up the sublimation – since water is a better conductor of heat than air –and creates ethereal fog that’s a combination of the expanding carbon dioxide and condensate from the water.

This gorgeous video from Wryfield Lab lets you admire the process close-up. As the dry ice sublimates, watch for the ice crystals that grow on its surface. This is deposition–the opposite of sublimation–and comes from water vapor freezing onto the dry ice.

A warning for those who want to try this at home: only do this in well-ventilated spaces. The shift from solid to gas requires a huge increase in volume. Carbon dioxide is denser than air, so it does stay low to the ground, but you can still suffocate yourself (or children or pets) if you do this in an enclosed space.

Lithopedion - calcified fetus

Lithopedion - calcified fetus
This highly unusual specimen remained in the abdomen of a woman for 55 years. During this time the mother had five additional uncomplicated pregnancies.

The strange condition, lithopedion, occurs when a fetus dies and calcifies outside of the womb.
Lithopedion, which is Greek for “stone baby,” is so rare that there are only around 400 cases of it documented in history.

Stone babies occur as the result of an ectopic pregnancy, or pregnancy where the fetus develops outside of the mother’s womb. In the case of stone babies, the deceased fetus has no way to leave the body. Instead of allowing the fetus to rot inside the abdomen and expose the mother to potential infection, her body works to calcify it — or mummify it in calcium. Calcification is essentially an accumulation of salts the human body uses as a barrier against potential infection.

Anticrepuscular Rays over Colorado

Anticrepuscular Rays over Colorado
What's happening over the horizon? Although the scene may appear somehow supernatural, nothing more unusual is occurring than a setting Sun and some well placed clouds. Pictured below are anticrepuscular rays.

To understand them, start by picturing common crepuscular rays that are seen any time that sunlight pours though scattered clouds. Now although sunlight indeed travels along straight lines, the projections of these lines onto the spherical sky are great circles. Therefore, the crepuscular rays from a setting (or rising) sun will appear to re-converge on the other side of the sky.

At the anti-solar point 180 degrees around from the Sun, they are referred to as anticrepuscular rays. Featured here is a particularly striking display of anticrepuscular rays photographed earlier this month in Westminster, Colorado, USA.

Brexit vote rattles UK and European scientists

Brexit vote rattles UK and European scientists
Because we all know that there was no funding for particle physics research before the EU became what it is today, and scientists from different countries were basically prohibited from collaborating.

And before everyone starts with comments about US or other single nation achievements in science let me remind you that top-level science can't be achieved by a single nation these days. If you truly think that, I recommend you go back to the 1700s.

Here's what the Brexit result means for science, particularly physics, in the UK and the rest of Europe.

Jupiter's Clouds from New Horizons

Jupiter's Clouds from New Horizons
The New Horizons spacecraft took some stunning images of Jupiter on its way out to Pluto. Famous for its Great Red Spot, Jupiter is also known for its regular, equatorial cloud bands, visible through even modest sized telescopes. The featured image, horizontally compressed, was taken in 2007 near Jupiter's terminator and shows the Jovian giant's wide diversity of cloud patterns.

On the far left are clouds closest to Jupiter's South Pole. Here turbulent whirlpools and swirls are seen in a dark region, dubbed a belt, that rings the planet. Even light colored regions, called zones, show tremendous structure, complete with complex wave patterns.

The energy that drives these waves surely comes from below. New Horizons is the fastest space probe ever launched, has successfully complete its main flyby of Pluto in 2015, and is now heading further out and on track to flyby Kuiper belt object 2014 MU69 in 2019. In the near term, many space enthusiasts excitedly await Juno's arrival at Jupiter next Monday.

25 June is reserved to Marie Curie
On this day in 1903, Marie Curie defends her doctoral thesis on radioactive substances – at Université de la Sorbonne in Paris – becoming the first woman in France to receive a doctoral degree.

The examination committee expressed the opinion that Curie's findings, including the determination of Radium’s atomic weight, represented the greatest scientific contribution ever made in a doctoral thesis.

Of the committee’s three members, were two future Nobel Laureates - Gabriel Lippmann (Physics 1908) and Henri Moissan, (Chemistry 1906).

Marie Curie, née Maria Sklodowska (1867–1934), was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1903) for pioneering research on radiation, and the Prize in Chemistry (1911) for the discovery of the elements radium and polonium.

Run Octo...run

Run Octo...run
Crawling, swimming, squeezing, jetting—the range of movement available to an octopus is impressive. Yet some species occasionally choose to stand up on two arms and “run” backwards.
This is a neat trick to avoid predators - they lift up six of their arms and walk backward on the other two.

Chrissy Huffard, a Senior Researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, explains the pros and cons of this seemingly silly behavior and why an octopus might find looking foolish useful.

Sagittarius Sunflowers

Sagittarius Sunflowers
These three bright nebulae are often featured in telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius and the crowded starfields of the central Milky Way. In fact, 18th century cosmic tourist Charles Messier cataloged two of them; M8, the large nebula left of center, and colorful M20 near the bottom of the frame The third, NGC 6559, is right of M8, separated from the larger nebula by dark dust lanes.

All three are stellar nurseries about five thousand light-years or so distant. The expansive M8, over a hundred light-years across, is also known as the Lagoon Nebula. M20's popular moniker is the Trifid.

In the composite image, narrowband data records ionized hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur atoms radiating at visible wavelengths. The mapping of colors and range of brightness used to compose this cosmic still life were inspired by Van Gogh's famous Sunflowers. Just right of the Trifid one of Messier's open star clusters, M21, is also included on the telescopic canvas.

A small asteroid has been discovered in an orbit around the sun that keeps it as a constant companion of Earth, and it will remain so for centuries to come.
As it orbits the sun, this new asteroid, designated 2016 HO3, appears to circle around Earth as well. It is too distant to be considered a true satellite of our planet, but it is the best and most stable example to date of a near-Earth companion, or "quasi-satellite."

Cirrus over Paris

Cirrus over Paris
What's that over Paris? Cirrus. Typically, cirrus clouds appear white or gray when reflecting sunlight, can appear dark at sunset (or sunrise) against a better lit sky. Cirrus are among the highest types of clouds and are usually thin enough to see stars through.

Cirrus clouds may form from moisture released above storm clouds and so may herald the arrival of a significant change in weather. Conversely, cirrus clouds have also been seen on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Titan, Uranus, and Neptune. The featured image was taken two days ago from a window in District 15, Paris, France, Earth. Researchers create organic nanowire synaptic transistors that emulate the working principles of biological synapses

Researchers create organic nanowire synaptic transistors that emulate the working principles of biological synapses
A team of researchers with the Pohang University of Science and Technology in Korea has created organic nanowire synaptic transistors that emulate the working principles of biological synapses. As they describe in their paper published in the journal Science Advances, the artificial synapses they have created use much smaller amounts of power than other devices developed thus far and rival that of their biological counterparts.

Scientists are taking multiple paths towards building next generation computers—some are fixated on finding a material to replace silicon, others are working towards building a quantum machine, while still others are busy trying to build something much more like the human mind. A hybrid system of sorts that has organic artificial parts meant to mimic those found in the brain. In this new effort, the team in Korea has reached a new milestone in creating an artificial synapse—one that has very nearly the same power requirements as those inside our skulls.

Up till now, artificial synapses have consumed far more power than human synapses, which researchers have calculated is on the order of 10 femtojoules each time a single one fires. The new synapse created by the team requires just 1.23 femtojoules per event—far lower than anything achieved thus far, and on par with their natural rival. Though it might seem the artificial creations are using less power, they do not perform the same functions just yet, so natural biology is still ahead. Plus there is the issue of transferring information from one neuron to another. The “wires” used by the human body are still much thinner than the metal kind still being used by scientists—still, researchers are gaining.

Ultrasound Implant Safely Opens Blood–Brain Barrier

Ultrasound Implant Safely Opens Blood–Brain Barrier
The cells lining blood vessels in the brain form tight, tough-to-penetrate junctions that prevent toxic molecules from slipping into the brain.

Unfortunately, this blood-brain barrier also blocks cancer drugs from reaching tumor cells in the brain, creating a significant drug-delivery problem.

Now, preliminary results from a Phase I/II clinical trial suggest that a small implant that emits ultrasound waves can safely open the blood-brain barrier in people, potentially allowing drugs in.

Pink Robin

Pink Robin
Endemic to the dense, temperate and tropical forests of southeastern Australia, the pink robin (Petroica rodinogaster) is a plump little bird that weighs just 10g. The species displays striking sexual dimorphism - only the males are decorated in that delicious candy hue, framed by a smoky black throat, head, and back. The plumage of the females is far more subdued, but they're just as adorable.

Pink robins might look very similar to the red-breasted European robin, but they're barely even related. The pink robin belongs to a family called Petroicidae, which contains 45 known species.

Unlike the European robin, known for its gregariousness, the pink robin is something of a shy bird.  It is notoriously difficult to photograph as it tries to keep itself as hidden as possible while it darts about for food.

Sunrise Solstice over Stonehenge

Sunrise Solstice over Stonehenge
Today the Sun reaches its northernmost point in planet Earth's sky. Called a solstice, the date traditionally marks a change of seasons -- from spring to summer in Earth's Northern Hemisphere and from fall to winter in Earth's Southern Hemisphere.

The featured image was taken during the week of the 2008 summer solstice at Stonehenge in United Kingdom, and captures a picturesque sunrise involving fog, trees, clouds, stones placed about 4,500 years ago, and a 4.5 billion year old large glowing orb. Even given the precession of the Earth's rotational axis over the millennia, the Sun continues to rise over Stonehenge in an astronomically significant way.

Reindeer can change their eye color when adjusting to different lighting conditions.

Reindeer can change their eye color when adjusting to different lighting conditions.
Reindeer are the only mammals whose eyes are known to change color, going from gold in the summer, when the sun is a constant presence in the arctic, to a less reflective blue in the dark winter months.

In dark conditions, muscles in your irises contract to dilate your pupils and allow more light into your eyes. When it’s bright again, the irises widen and the pupils shrink; the same thing happens in reindeer, but the arctic winter forces their pupils to dilate for months at a time.

This constant effort to stay dilated ends up blocking the small vessels that drain fluid out of the eyes; causing pressure to build up. Consequently, this compresses the collagen fibers that make up the tapetum, a mirrored layer that sits behind the retina, and cause the eye to reflect blue wavelengths of light instead of yellow.

Sputnik Planum vs. Krun Macula

Sputnik Planum vs. Krun Macula
Pluto's pitted plains meet rugged highlands in this stunning view. On the left lies a southeastern extent of the bright region still informally known as Sputnik Planum. At right the edge of a dark region, informally Krun Macula, rises some 2.5 kilometers above the icy plains.

Along the boundary, connected clusters of large pits form deep valleys, some over 40 kilometers long with shadowy floors. Nitrogen ice is likely responsible for the more reflective plains. The dark red color of the highlands is thought to be from complex compounds called tholins, a product of ultraviolet light induced chemical reactions with methane in Pluto's atmosphere.

The enhanced color image includes portions of the highest and second highest resolution image data from the New Horizons July 2015 flyby of the distant world.

Mechanical gears in jumping insects

Mechanical gears in jumping insects
The biological form of a mechanical gear was observed in nature in juvenile planthoppers (Genus: Issus), a common insect that can be found in gardens across Europe.

The insect has hind-leg joints with curved cog-like strips of opposing ‘teeth’ that intermesh, rotating like mechanical gears to synchronize the animal’s legs when it launches into a jump. The finding demonstrates that gear mechanisms previously thought to be solely man-made have an evolutionary precedent.

In 1963 Valentina Tereshkova orbited Earth 48 times!
On June 16, 1963, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to be launched into the space after being selected from more than 400 aspirants. It is said that one of the reasons for her selection was her parachute jumping and skydiving skills.

She made her first flight as a pilot in Vostok 6. The word Chaika was used to call her in the space which, later, was used as the name of an asteroid in the honour of Tereshkova.

After her flight, she graduated as a cosmonaut engineer from Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy. She earned a doctorate degree in engineering in 1977.

Who gets hooked on drugs and who stays clean?

Who gets hooked on drugs and who stays clean?
Why does one person who tries cocaine get addicted, while another might use it and then leave it alone? Why do some people who kick a drug habit manage to stay clean, while others relapse? And why do some families seem more prone to addiction than others?

The road to answering these questions may have a lot to do with specific genetic factors that vary from individual to individual, a new study in rats suggests.

Of course, an animal study can’t explain all the factors that contribute to differences in addiction among humans. But the findings reveal new information about the roles played by both inherited traits and addiction-related changes in the brain.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by a University of Michigan Medical School team.

It’s the first time scientists have shown in selectively bred animals that the propensity for addiction is linked to differences in expression of genes for specific molecules in a specific brain region. It’s also the first demonstration that a DNA tag called an epigenetic marker can predispose an individual to addiction and relapse.
