Why does ice cream give you brain freeze?

Why does ice cream give you brain freeze?
Brain freeze, also known as an ice-cream headache or cold-stimulus headache has the very long scientific name of sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia. It is a kind of short-term headache typically linked to the rapid consumption of ice-cream, ice pops, or very cold drinks.

A cold sensation in the mouth can lead to pain in the head. While brain freeze describes the feeling, it’s wrong, as the brain doesn’t have any pain receptors of its own. So why does a cold sensation in the mouth lead to pain in the head?

The long trigeminal nerve picks up sensations from the mouth, nose, teeth and forehead. A sudden chill causes blood vessels in the roof of the mouth to constrict and dilate, sending pain signals through the trigeminal nerve to the brain.

But this pain is felt in the forehead instead of the mouth. This could be because the forehead is more exposed to the outside world, so the brain assumes the signal is coming from there instead. This phenomenon is known as ‘referred pain’, and is also seen in heart attacks, when pain is felt in the shoulders or back. Luckily ‘brain freeze’ only lasts a few seconds and can be easily ended by swallowing quickly – at least until your next bite.

Birds of Paradise

Birds of Paradise
There are more than three dozen species in the family Paradisaeidae, more commonly known as the birds of paradise. Most are distinguished by striking colors and bright plumage of yellow, blue, scarlet, and green. These colors distinguish them as some of the world's most dramatic and attractive birds. Males often sport vibrant feathered ruffs or amazingly elongated feathers, which are known as wires or streamers. Some species have enormous head plumes or other distinctive ornaments, such as breast shields or head fans.

Males put their bright colors and unusual ornaments to good use when they display for females. Their elaborate dances, poses, and other rituals accentuate their appearance and put on a phenomenal show for both female birds and any humans lucky enough to be in the vicinity. Such displays can last for hours, and in many species they consume a significant part of the male's time.

Stars and Gas of the Running Chicken Nebula

Stars and Gas of the Running Chicken Nebula
To some, it looks like a giant chicken running across the sky. To others, it looks like a gaseous nebula where star formation takes place. Cataloged as IC 2944, the Running Chicken Nebula spans about 100 light years and lies about 6,000 light years away toward the constellation of the Centaur (Centaurus).

The featured image, shown in scientifically assigned colors, was captured recently in an 11-hour exposure from a backyard near Melbourne, Australia. Two star clusters are visible: the Pearl Cluster seen on the far left, and Collinder 249 embedded in the nebula's glowing gas. Although difficult to discern here, several dark molecular clouds with distinct shapes can be found inside the nebula.

What is a molecular cloud?
A molecular cloud, sometimes called a stellar nursery (if star formation is occurring within), is a type of interstellar cloud, the density and size of which permit the formation of molecules, most commonly molecular hydrogen (H2). This is in contrast to other areas of the interstellar medium that contain predominantly ionized gas.

Helix Nebula in Visible and in Infrared Light

Helix Nebula in Visible and in Infrared Light
This object, called the Helix nebula, lies 650 light-years away, in the constellation of Aquarius. Also known by the catalog number NGC 7293, it is a typical example of a class of objects called planetary nebulae. Discovered in the 18th century, these cosmic works of art were erroneously named for their resemblance to gas-giant planets.

Planetary nebulae are actually the remains of stars that once looked a lot like our sun. These stars spend most of their lives turning hydrogen into helium in massive runaway nuclear fusion reactions in their cores. In fact, this process of fusion provides all the light and heat that we get from our sun. Our sun will blossom into a planetary nebula when it dies in about five billion years.

When the hydrogen fuel for the fusion reaction runs out, the star turns to helium for a fuel source, burning it into an even heavier mix of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen. Eventually, the helium will also be exhausted, and the star dies, puffing off its outer gaseous layers and leaving behind the tiny, hot, dense core, called a white dwarf. The white dwarf is about the size of Earth, but has a mass very close to that of the original star; in fact, a teaspoon of a white dwarf would weigh as much as a few elephants!

Dot....Circle

Dot....Circle
Each dot chases the one before it at a constant speed, slower than the one it is chasing by a fixed ratio. As a result each dot converges to a smaller circle inside the one it is chasing. If they had the same speed, they would get closer and closer to catching up, but would take infinitely long to do so. If they were faster then they would catch up with each other in a finite length of time.

RoboBee

RoboBee
Inspired by the biology of a bee, researchers at the Wyss Institute, Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and Northeastern University are developing RoboBees, man-made systems that could perform myriad roles in agriculture or disaster relief.

A Robobee measures about half the size of a paper clip, weighs less than one-tenth of a gram, and flies using “artificial muscles” comprised of materials that contract when a voltage is applied.
Flying robots could be invaluable in emergencies, but there’s a hitch: flying takes a lot of energy. Robobee’s ability to perch could make a big difference.

The little flying machine, dubbed a “RoboBee”, has been designed to perch on a host of different surfaces, opening up new possibilities for the use of drones in providing a bird’s-eye view of the world, scientists say.

Rosetta detected the ingredients for life travelling through space on comet 67P

Rosetta detected the ingredients for life travelling through space on comet 67P
Ingredients regarded as crucial for the origin of life on Earth have been discovered at the comet that ESA’s Rosetta spacecraft has been probing for almost two years.

They include the amino acid glycine, which is commonly found in proteins, and phosphorus, a key component of DNA and cell membranes.

Scientists have long debated the important possibility that water and organic molecules were brought by asteroids and comets to the young Earth after it cooled following its formation, providing some of the key building blocks for the emergence of life.

While some comets and asteroids are already known to have water with a composition like that of Earth’s oceans, Rosetta found a significant difference at its comet – fuelling the debate on their role in the origin of Earth’s water.

But new results reveal that comets nevertheless had the potential to deliver ingredients critical to establish life as we know it.

What is microdermabrasion?

What is microdermabrasion?
The skin is the largest organ of the body. It serves many important functions, including protecting the body from infection, and regulating body temperature and fluids.

Despite its resiliency, skin can be damaged by hormonal changes, exposure to environmental elements, and aging. If the appearance and texture of the skin have been affected by these factors, a procedure called microdermabrasion may be of help.

During microdermabrasion treatments a jet of very tiny crystals is sprayed across the surface of the skin to remove impurities and imperfections. The discarded crystals and debris are simultaneously vacuumed into a receptacle and are later disposed.

Because microdermabrasion allows the controlled removal of the outermost layers of the skin, there is little pain involved and improvement in the skin's appearance can be seen immediately. However, several treatments may be needed to achieve the desired results.

There are several potential complications associated with this procedure that should be discussed with a doctor prior to the procedure.

Valles Marineris: The Grand Canyon of Mars

Valles Marineris: The Grand Canyon of Mars
Mars will look good in Earth's skies over the next few days -- but not this good. To get a view this amazing, a spacecraft had to actually visit the red planet. Running across the image center, though, is one the largest canyons in the Solar System. Named Valles Marineris, the grand valley extends over 3,000 kilometers long, spans as much as 600 kilometers across, and delves as much as 8 kilometers deep.

By comparison, the Earth's Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA is 800 kilometers long, 30 kilometers across, and 1.8 kilometers deep. The origin of the Valles Marineris remains unknown, although a leading hypothesis holds that it started as a crack billions of years ago as the planet cooled. Several geologic processes have been identified in the canyon. The featured mosaic was created from over 100 images of Mars taken by Viking Orbiters in the 1970s. Tomorrow, Mars and Earth will pass the closest in 11 years, resulting in the red planet being quite noticeable toward the southeast after sunset.

Frisson or 'Skin Orgasm' - What causes a thrill, followed by a chill?

Frisson or 'Skin Orgasm'  - What causes a thrill, followed by a chill?
Have you ever been listening to a great piece of music and felt a chill run up your spine? Or goosebumps tickle your arms and shoulders?
Listening to emotionally moving music is the most common trigger of frisson, but some feel it while looking at beautiful artwork, watching a particularly moving scene in a movie or having physical contact with another person. Studies have shown that roughly two-thirds of the population feels frisson.

While scientists are still unlocking the secrets of this phenomenon, a large body of research over the past five decades has traced the origins of frisson to how we emotionally react to unexpected stimuli in our environment, particularly music.

Musical passages that include unexpected harmonies, sudden changes in volume or the moving entrance of a soloist are particularly common triggers for frisson because they violate listeners’ expectations in a positive way.

Scientists have found that the pleasurable experience of listening to music releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain important for more tangible pleasures associated with rewards such as food, drugs and sex.

Scientists measured dopamine release in response to music that elicited "chills," changes in skin conductance, heart rate, breathing, and temperature that were correlated with pleasurability ratings of the music. 'Chills' or 'musical frisson' is a well established marker of peak emotional responses to music.

A novel combination of PET and fMRI brain imaging techniques, revealed that dopamine release is greater for pleasurable versus neutral music, and that levels of release are correlated with the extent of emotional arousal and pleasurability ratings. Dopamine is known to play a pivotal role in establishing and maintaining behavior that is biologically necessary.

What causes volcanic lightning?

What causes volcanic lightning?
How lightning forms in general is still debated among scientists, and volcanic lightning is even less well understood. What is mostly agreed upon is that the process starts when particles separate, either after a collision or when a larger particle breaks in two. Then some difference in the aerodynamics of these particles causes the positively charged particles to be systematically separated from the negatively charged particles. Lightning is the electrical flow that results when this charge separation becomes too great for air to resist the flow of electricity.

Pictured below, the Sakurajima volcano in southern Japan was caught erupting in early January 2013.
The below image is particularly notable, however, for the lightning bolts caught near the volcano's summit.
One hypothesis holds that catapulting magma bubbles or volcanic ash are themselves electrically charged, and by their motion create these separated areas.

Mars Retrograde

Mars Retrograde
If you were to look up in the eastern sky at the same time each night and note where Mars appears to be compared to the constellations of stars, you would find the planet a little farther east with each viewing. That is, Mars appears to move from west to east from one night to the next.

Every two years or so, there are a couple of months when Mars' position from night to night seems to change direction and move east to west. This strange behavior was very puzzling to early skywatchers. Did the planet really stop, back up, change its mind, and then continue to move forward? Did it have some weird, mystical meaning?

Today we know what's going on. It's an illusion, caused by the ways that Earth and Mars orbit the sun.

Mars Retrograde Happens Every Two Years

The two planets are like race cars on an oval track. Earth has the inside lane and moves faster than Mars -- so much faster, in fact, that it makes two laps around the course in about as much time as it takes Mars to go around once.

About every 26 months, Earth comes up from behind and overtakes Mars. While we're passing by the red planet, it will look to us as though Mars is moving up and down. Then, as we move farther along our curved orbit and see the planet from a different angle, the illusion will disappear and we will once again see Mars move in a straight line.

This apparent erratic movement is called "retrograde motion." The illusion also happens with Jupiter and the other planets that orbit farther from the sun.

Just to make things a little more odd, the orbits that Earth and Mars follow don't quite lie in the same plane. It's as if the two planets were on separate tracks that are a little tilted with respect to each other. This causes another strange illusion.

Suppose you were to draw a dot on a sky map each night to show where Mars appears as it moves forward, goes through retrograde, and then resumes its forward motion. Connect the dots, and you'll draw either a loop or an open zigzag. The pattern depends on where Earth and Mars happen to be in their tilted racetrack orbits.

This graphic shows how fast a rocket must go to leave every planet

This graphic shows how fast a rocket must go to leave every planet
Gravity makes it possible for us to live on Earth, but it also makes it pretty hard to leave. Satellites fight gravity by going just fast enough to free-fall around the planet indefinitely, like the International Space Station, with many traveling at speeds of more than 17,500 mph.
But if you want to leave this planet, you have to go faster. This speed is called the escape velocity.

And because other planets in our solar system have different gravitational strength, they each have different escape velocities.

LSU researchers develop ‘holy grail’ eye drop to prevent, treat cataracts without surgery

LSU researchers develop ‘holy grail’ eye drop to prevent, treat cataracts without surgery
LSU AgCenter scientists have formulated a nanoparticle matrix that could be used in eye drops to both prevent and treat cataracts, a leading cause of vision loss in older adults.

Professor Cristina Sabliov and assistant professor Carlos Astete in the AgCenter Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering have found a way to use nanoparticles to efficiently deliver hydrophobic lutein and enhance its stability and antioxidant properties so it can be used effectively in eye drops.

Lutein is a naturally occurring yellow pigment known as a carotenoid. It can be found in numerous plants, including yellow flowers and corn, as well as egg yolks and animal fats.

Lutein can also be found in the human eye. Studies have shown that dietary supplements can help replenish ocular lutein. But treatments using lutein have been limited in the past by the substance’s poor water solubility, its susceptibility to degradation and low absorption efficiency.

“The nanoparticle matrix can deliver lutein to the eye efficiently as an eye drop formulation,” Sabliov said. “Direct application of lutein to the eye in this formulation improves its effect against cataracts.”

24 May is reserved to Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit

24 May is reserved to Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit
Today is the birthday of physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, born in Gdańsk, Poland, in 1686. He invented the alcohol thermometer and mercury thermometer and developed many precise meteorological instruments. He discovered that water does not always freeze or boil at the same temperature; other factors such as atmospheric pressure play a role.

And of course, Fahrenheit developed the temperature scale that bears his name. He originally chose 30° for the freezing point of water; it was later revised to 32°. Although the vast majority of the world uses the Celsius scale, a few holdouts, including the United States, go with Fahrenheit.

The "Weissenberg Effect" or Rod Climbing Experiment

The "Weissenberg Effect" or Rod Climbing Experiment
You may have noticed when baking that fluids don’t always behave as expected when you agitate them. If you put a spinning rod into a fluid, we’d expect the rod to fling fluid away, creating a little vortex that stirs everything around. And for a typical Newtonian fluid, this is what we see. The fluid’s viscosity tries to resist deforming the fluid, but the momentum imparted by the rod wins out.

With a viscoelastic fluid, on the other hand, the story is much different. As before, the spinning of the rod deforms the fluid. But the viscoelastic fluid contains long chains of polymers. As those polymers get stretched by the deformation, they generate their own forces, including forces parallel to the rod. Instead of being flung outward, the viscoelastic fluid starts climbing up the rod, with the stretchy elasticity of the polymers helping pull more fluid up and up.

How LSD can make us lose our sense of self

How LSD can make us lose our sense of self
When people take the psychedelic drug LSD, they sometimes feel as though the boundary that separates them from the rest of the world has dissolved. Now, the first functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI) of people's brains while on LSD help to explain this phenomenon known as "ego dissolution."

As researchers report in the Cell Press journal Current Biology on April 13, these images suggest that ego dissolution occurs as regions of the brain involved in higher cognition become heavily over-connected. The findings suggest that studies of LSD and other psychedelic drugs can produce important insights into the brain. They can also provide intriguing biological insight into philosophical questions about the very nature of reality, the researchers say.
