Behind Saturn

Behind Saturn
What's behind Saturn? The first answer is the camera itself, perched on the Cassini spacecraft currently orbiting behind the planet with the most grand ring system in our Solar System. The unusual perspective places Cassini on the far side of Saturn from the Sun so that more than half of Saturn appears dark -- a perspective that no Earth-based observer could achieve. Behind Saturn, in the context of the featured infrared image, is Saturn's moon Tethys, visible as the small speck above the unusual hexagonal cloud pattern that encompasses Saturn's North Pole.

Tethys actually orbits Saturn right in the ring plane, which places the 1000-km moon much farther from Cassini than the planet itself. Cassini has been studying Saturn and its moons for 12 years, but, unfortunately, its amazing mission will soon come to an end. In order to protect life that may exist on or inside Saturn's moons, the robotic spacecraft will be directed to crash into Saturn's thick atmosphere next September.

Messages, mentions with the same question:
"Why I cannot comment on any of your posts? Even I circled you or I follow one of your collections"

Well is very simple, I restricted the comments, only the people I circle can comment. Why? Because moderation of comments is time consuming. We are all different and on social media platforms we tend to act - a bit or a tone - crazy, because behind a keyboard we feel much more confident.

I'm not a business looking to attract more clients, I'm not a blogger...I don't care who circles me or not and I have 0 interest on becoming a social media guru. I simply started to use this platform so I can show to Matt (my 9yo son) that he can learn something new everyday even on social media.

The internet is full of interesting and gasmic information but there's also a lot of crap. Everyone has a choice...you can learn something even if you "waste" time on social media.
Therefore I'm not interested on spending time with comments moderation.

If G+ settings regarding commenting would be different perhaps I'd reconsider. For example people who follow a collection they could comment on the posts in that collection. But till then I'm sticking with "extended circles" as a setting for commenting on my public posts.

Here it is again:
If you think you have something interesting/new/weird/creepy to say/comment on any of my posts ping me and I'll add you to my circles.

Thought of the day - Convergence of Appearance.

Thought of the day - Convergence of Appearance.
Convergence (in a relationship) suggests that the longer you're with a partner (decade/s) the more you resemble each other.

Had a nice conversation with a friend of mine today on this subject. I mean, we've all seen, or maybe know couples who refer to themselves in the plural, have matching shirts, similar hairstyle, and — oddly — even seem to look like each other. Oh, they even tend to have same preferences. What's the catch? Is it commodity?

Why would people start to morph slowly into their partners?
One theory comes from psychologist Robert Zajonc of the University of Michigan in 1987 - Zajonc and his team asked volunteers to match photographs of men and women based on their facial similarity, and found that couples who'd been married for 25 years were overwhelmingly paired together.

Zajonc thought it was because a long life together meant shared experiences that left similar lines on faces, and that couples would therefore begin to look more similar.
Zajonc's theory of emotional face-mirroring was based on a basic principle: We imitate the people we're around the most. This phenomenon, called "unconscious mimicry," has been known for ages.

My conclusion:
If you live with an earthling for more than a decade you might become One Mixed Being.

Question:
Who's gonna be the "lost" one? Or is a 2way road?

The "Unit Circle" is a circle with a radius of 1.

The "Unit Circle" is a circle with a radius of 1.
Because the radius is 1, we can directly measure sine, cosine and tangent.

What happens when the angle, θ, is 0°?
cos 0° = 1, sin 0° = 0 and tan 0° = 0

What happens when θ is 90°?
cos 90° = 0, sin 90° = 1 and tan 90° is undefined

The "sides" can be positive or negative according to the rules of Cartesian coordinates. This makes the sine, cosine and tangent change between positive and negative values also.

A Huge Solar Filament Erupts

A Huge Solar Filament Erupts
Filaments sometimes explode off the Sun. Featured, a huge filament had been seen hovering over the Sun's surface for over a week before it erupted late in 2010. The image sequence was taken by the Earth-orbiting Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in one color of ultraviolet light. The explosion created a Coronal Mass Ejection that dispersed high energy plasma into the Solar System.

This plasma cloud, though, missed the Earth and so did not cause auroras. The featured eruption depicted how widely separated areas of the Sun can sometimes act in unison. Explosions like this will likely become less common over the next few years as our Sun goes through a Solar Minimum in its surface magnetic activity.

Why should physicists study history?

Why should physicists study history?
For one reason, to understand the importance of diversity in cultivating new ideas: "Marietta Blau (1894–1970) developed the nuclear emulsion technique—critical to the emergence of the field we now call particle physics ... As a Jewish woman in interwar Austria, Blau ... was doubly excluded. Women were often refused entrance to laboratories, sometimes on the grounds that their hair was too flammable. Jews were rarely allowed to hold high-ranking positions even before the rise of the Nazis.

Such restrictions meant that if Blau wanted to study particles, she had to develop cheap, portable detectors that could be made with commonly available materials. With her techniques from the margins, she created an essential observational tool that was utterly surprising to those in the largely homogenous physics community of the time."

What is a myoclonus?

What is a myoclonus?
In its simplest form, myoclonus consists of a muscle twitch followed by relaxation. A hiccup is an example of this type of myoclonus. Other familiar examples of myoclonus are the jerks or "sleep starts" that some people experience while drifting off to sleep.
Do you ever have the inexplicable feeling that you’re falling just as you’re drifting off into a deep sleep?

Most people who have experienced this describe it as the sudden sensation of tripping, leaping or falling into a void. Some might just keep on sleeping, but the majority of people wake up with a rapid heartbeat feeling scared.

Perhaps you’ve heard explanations like your soul is leaving your body or you’ve been possessed by dark forces when it happens, but none of this is true. This is called a myoclonic jerk and is a normal physiological process.

When we sleep, we go through several sleep cycles, each consisting of four different stages. The sensation of falling down occurs during the first stage of sleep, called NREM. There are a few theories about why this happens. One is that when your muscles relax as you’re about to fall asleep, your brain gets confused sometimes and thinks you’re falling. As a result, your muscles react by tensing up, so you ’catch yourself’ before you fall. Other scientists believe it’s a reflex that humans developed during the evolutionary process to prevent them from falling out of the trees where they once slept.

These simple forms of myoclonus occur in normal, healthy persons and cause no difficulties. When more widespread, myoclonus may involve persistent, shock-like contractions in a group of muscles. In some cases, myoclonus begins in one region of the body and spreads to muscles in other areas. More severe cases of myoclonus can distort movement and severely limit a person's ability to eat, talk, or walk. These types of myoclonus may indicate an underlying disorder in the brain or nerves.

Blue Danube Analemma

Blue Danube Analemma
The Sun's annual waltz through planet Earth's sky forms a graceful curve known as an analemma. The analemma's figure 8 shape is tipped vertically at far right in this well-composed fisheye view from Budapest, Hungary. Captured at a chosen spot on the western bank of the Danube river, the Sun's position was recorded at 11:44 Central European Time on individual exposures over days spanning 2015 July 23 to 2016 July 4.

Of course, on the northern summer solstice the Sun is at the top of the curve, but at the midpoints for the autumn and spring equinoxes. With snow on the ground, the photographer's shadow and equipment bag also appear in the base picture used for the composite panorama, taken on 2016 January 7. On that date, just after the winter solstice, the Sun was leaving the bottom of the beautiful curve over the blue Danube.

July 28th is reserved to Karl Popper
Whenever a theory appears to you as the only possible one, take this as a sign that you have neither understood the theory nor the problem which it was intended to solve."

Today is the birthday of the philosopher of science Karl Popper, born in Vienna, Austria in 1902. Popper set out to explain what distinguishes scientific theories from nonscientific ones—essentially, science from pseudoscience. Yes there's the scientific method, but that didn't satisfy him; plenty of theories (Popper cited Marx's theory of history and Freud's psychoanalysis as examples) are supported by observation and empirical evidence but not necessarily scientific.

Focusing on Einstein's general theory of relativity, Popper proposed that scientific theories must be falsifiable—they must make "risky" predictions that, if they don't show up in observations, refute the theory. "The scientific status of a theory is its falsifiability, or refutability, or testability," he wrote. Popper is considered one of the greatest modern scientific philosophers.

Unprecedented Alzheimer’s drug slows disease by 80 percent

Unprecedented Alzheimer’s drug slows disease by 80 percent
A drug that targets tau tangles in the brain has produced strong results in a large clinical trial, slowing the progression of the disease in hundreds of people.

The drug, called LMTX, is the first to produce really promising results in a large phase III trial, in which potential therapies are pitted against a placebo in hundreds of recipients. Drugs do already exist for Alzheimer’s, but these generally have only a modest effect.

The trial involved 891 people who already had mild or moderate symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. Some received LMTX alone, others took it in conjunction with other treatments they were already taking, and the rest received a placebo.

At the end of the 15-month trial, tests of mental ability revealed that those taking LMTX alone had deteriorated significantly more slowly than those taking placebo – both in terms of cognition, and their ability to continue carrying out every-day tasks, such as dressing and feeding themselves.

Herschel's Eagle Nebula

Herschel's Eagle Nebula
A now famous picture from the Hubble Space Telescope featured Pillars of Creation, star forming columns of cold gas and dust light-years long inside M16, the Eagle Nebula. This false-color composite image views the nearby stellar nursery using data from the Herschel Space Observatory's panoramic exploration of interstellar clouds along the plane of our Milky Way galaxy.

Herschel's far infrared detectors record the emission from the region's cold dust directly. The famous pillars are included near the center of the scene. While the central group of hot young stars is not apparent at these infrared wavelengths, the stars' radiation and winds carve the shapes within the interstellar clouds.

Scattered white spots are denser knots of gas and dust, clumps of material collapsing to form new stars. The Eagle Nebula is some 6,500 light-years distant, an easy target for binoculars or small telescopes in a nebula rich part of the sky toward the split constellation Serpens Cauda (the tail of the snake).

Puzzling a Sky over Argentina

Puzzling a Sky over Argentina
Can you find the comet? True, a careful eye can find thousands of stars, tens of constellations, four planets, three galaxies, and the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy -- all visible in the sky of this spectacular 180-degree panorama.

Also, if you know what to look for, you can identify pervasive green airglow, an earthly cloud, the south celestial pole, and even a distant cluster of stars. But these are all easier to find than Comet 252P/LINEAR. The featured image, taken in el Leoncito National Park, Argentina in early April, also features the dome of the Jorge Sahade telescope on the hill on the far right.

Have you found the comet yet? If so, good for you (it was the green spot on the left), but really the harder thing to find is Small Cloud of Magellan.

25 July is reserved to Rosalind Franklin
Today is the birthday of Rosalind Franklin, the pioneering x-ray crystallographer who made essential contributions toward determining the structure of DNA. She was born in London in 1920.

Franklin received a PhD in physical chemistry from Cambridge in 1945. Her work in the early 1950s exposed elusive structural details about the composition and structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which encodes genetic information for all single-celled and multi-celled organisms on Earth.

Franklin determined the density of DNA and its helical shape, and her photographs proved crucial to James Watson and Francis Crick's double-helix model. In April 1953 a paper by Franklin appeared third in a series of studies in Nature describing DNA structure, with Watson and Crick's paper appearing first. That's just one of the reasons that Franklin's contributions have been overlooked over the years. Franklin died in 1958 from cancer at age 37.

A Romanian cave sealed for 5.5 million years is slowly being cataloged, with some interesting finds.

A Romanian cave sealed for 5.5 million years is slowly being cataloged, with some interesting finds.
Movile Cave has an atmosphere so dangerous that the few scientists who have so far been allowed to visit must use breathing equipment, thanks to low levels of oxygen and high levels of hydrogen sulphide in the air. Most creatures in the cave are thought to have been sealed in over five million years ago, and then evolved features to deal with the dark, such as losing their eyes and growing longer legs and antennae.

The ecosystem relies entirely upon chemosynthetic bacteria that extract carbon from the air without the aid of light. The most numerous bacteria use carbon dioxide, and others get their carbon from methane. The bacterial film on the water and walls is where all the nutrients enter this ecosystem, and it’s the only known example of such a system. Small animals eat the slime, and larger animals eat them.

Deep Magellanic Clouds Image Indicates Collisions

Deep Magellanic Clouds Image Indicates Collisions
Did the two most famous satellite galaxies of our Milky Way Galaxy once collide? No one knows for sure, but a detailed inspection of deep images like that featured here give an indication that they have.

Pictured, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is on the top left and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is on the bottom right. The surrounding field is monochrome color-inverted to highlight faint star streams, shown in gray.

Perhaps surprisingly, the featured research-grade image was compiled with small telescopes to cover the large angular field -- nearly 40 degrees across. Much of the faint nebulosity is Galactic Cirrus clouds of thin dust in our own Galaxy, but a faint stream of stars does appear to be extending from the SMC toward the LMC.

Also, stars surrounding the LMC appear asymmetrically distributed, indicating in simulations that they could well have been pulled off gravitationally in one or more collisions. Both the LMC and the SMC are visible to the unaided eye in southern skies. Future telescopic observations and computer simulations are sure to continue in a continuing effort to better understand the history of our Milky Way and its surroundings.

‘Floating Piers’ on Lake Iseo

‘Floating Piers’ on Lake Iseo
These four images from the Sentinel-2A satellite show Lake Iseo in northern Italy – the site of the ‘Floating Piers’ installation by the Bulgarian–American artist, Christo.

The first image from 19 April shows the lake’s Monte Isola (island), but as time progresses the floating dock takes form and, in the final image from 21 June, is covered with yellow fabric. The walkway is about 16 m wide.

The installation allows visitors to ‘walk on water’ from the lakes eastern shore to two islands.

Visiting the piers is free and accessible 24 hours a day, weather permitting, until 3 July 2016.

Microburst

Microburst
A microburst is a localized column of sinking air (downdraft) within a thunderstorm and is usually less than or equal to 2.5 miles in diameter. Microbursts can cause extensive damage at the surface, and in some instances, can be life-threatening. There are two primary types of microbursts: 1) wet microbursts and 2) dry microbursts.

Wet microbursts are accompanied by significant precipitation and are common in the Southeast during the summer months.
It all starts with the development of a thunderstorm and the water droplets/hailstones being suspended within the updraft.  Sometimes an updraft is so strong it suspends large amounts of these droplets and hailstones in the upper portions of the thunderstorm.

There are many factors that can lead to evaporational cooling (sinking air) and therefore weakening of the updraft. Once this occurs, it is no longer capable of holding the large core of rain/hail up in the thunderstorm. As a result, the core plummets to the ground. As it hits the ground it spreads out in all directions. The location in which the microburst first hits the ground experiences the highest winds and greatest damage.

Updated Brain Map Identifies Nearly 100 New Regions

Updated Brain Map Identifies Nearly 100 New Regions
The brain looks like a featureless expanse of folds and bulges, but it’s actually carved up into invisible territories. Each is specialized: Some groups of neurons become active when we recognize faces, others when we read, others when we raise our hands.

Understanding the amazingly complex human cerebral cortex requires a map (or parcellation) of its major subdivisions, known as cortical areas. Making an accurate areal map has been a century-old objective in neuroscience. Using multi-modal magnetic resonance images from the Human Connectome Project (HCP) and an objective semi-automated neuroanatomical approach, scientists delineated 180 areas per hemisphere bounded by sharp changes in cortical architecture, function, connectivity, and/or topography in a precisely aligned group average of 210 healthy young adults. They characterized 97 new areas and 83 areas previously reported using post-mortem microscopy or other specialized study-specific approaches.

Dark Dunes on Mars (Horizontally Compressed)

Dark Dunes on Mars (Horizontally Compressed)
How does wind affect sand on Mars? To help find out if it differs significantly from Earth, the robotic Curiosity rover on Mars was directed to investigate the dark Namib Dune in the Bagnold Dune Field in Gale Crater. Namib is the first active sand dune investigated up close outside of planet Earth.

Wind-created ripples on Earth-bound sand dunes appear similar to ripples on Mars, with one exception. The larger peaks visible on dark Namib dune, averaging about 3 meters apart, are of a type seen only underwater on Earth. They appear to arise on Mars because of the way the thin Martian wind drags dark sand particles.

The featured image was taken last December and is horizontally compressed to show context. In the distance, a normal dusty Martian landscape slopes up in light orange, while a rock-strewn landscape is visible on the far right. Curiosity unexpectedly went into safe mode in early July, but it was brought out last week and has now resumed exploring the once lake-filled interior of Gale Crater for further signs that it was once habitable by microbial life.

Forming Granular Plugs

Forming Granular Plugs
Imagine filling a narrow tube with a mixture of water and tiny glass beads. Then take a syringe and very slowly start drawing out the water. As the water gets sucked out of the tube, air will be pulled into the opposite end. The meniscus where the air and water meet sweeps up the glass beads like a liquid bulldozer.

As the experiment continues, pressure builds up and air starts filtering through the beads, changing the viscous and frictional forces the system experiences. Eventually, the grains break off, leaving a chunk of glass beads – known as a plug – behind. Keep draining the tube and more plugs form.

Climate change could cost the world $2 trillion over the next 14 years

Climate change could cost the world $2 trillion over the next 14 years
Donald Trump is about to become the Republican nominee for president, a man who has described climate change as a concept “created by and for the Chinese” and “bullshit.” Meanwhile, the United Nations released research Tuesday which indicates said “bullshit” could interfere with productivity, costing the world $2 trillion over the next 14 years.

Ironically, this also coincides with the 10-year anniversary of then-senator Barack Obama‘s climate speech that changed the face of politics.

Thought of the day - Bicameralism

Thought of the day - Bicameralism
So what exactly is bicameralism?
Bicameralism is a hypothesis in psychology that argues that the human mind once assumed a state in which cognitive functions were divided between one part of the brain which appears to be "speaking", and a second part which listens and obeys—a bicameral mind.

The term was coined by Julian Jaynes, who presented the idea in his 1976 book The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind. In his book, psychologist Julian Jaynes uses the Iliad as a major supporting evidence for his theory of bicameralism, which posits that until about the time described in the Iliad, humans had a much different mentality than present day humans, essentially lacking in what we call consciousness.

He suggests that humans heard and obeyed commands from what they identified as gods, until the change in human mentality that incorporated the motivating force into the conscious self. He points out that almost every action in the Iliad is directed, caused, or influenced by a god, and that earlier translations show an astonishing lack of words suggesting thought, planning, or introspection. Those that do appear, he argues, are misinterpretations made by translators imposing a modern mentality on the characters.

The book is wonderful, if you have no clue what I'm talking about...give it a try.

Foot note:
If your religion requires you to hate someone you need a new religion...but if you hear your God's voice telling you to hate someone, well, you're psychotic!!!
Auditory verbal hallucinations, the experience of “hearing voices”, present us with an interesting paradox: the experiences are generated from within a single individual but are typically experienced as a social phenomenon—that is, a form of communication from another speaker. Consider a lobotomy ;)
