Who is VertiGo?

Who is VertiGo?
VertiGo is a wall-climbing robot that is capable of transitioning from the ground to the wall, created in collaboration between Disney Research Zurich and ETH. The robot has two tiltable propellers that provide thrust onto the wall, and four wheels. One pair of wheels is steerable, and each propeller has two degrees of freedom for adjusting the direction of thrust.

By transitioning from the ground to a wall and back again, VertiGo extends the ability of robots to travel through urban and indoor environments. The robot is able to move on a wall quickly and with agility. The use of propellers to provide thrust onto the wall ensures that the robot is able to traverse over indentations such as masonry.

The choice of two propellers rather than one enables a floor to wall transition – thrust is applied both towards the wall using the rear propeller, and in an upward direction using the front propeller, resulting in a flip onto the wall.

Lake Baikal, the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lake, curves for nearly 400 miles through south-eastern Siberia, north of the Mongolian border. It lies in a cleft where Asia is literally splitting apart, the beginnings of a future ocean.

Geologists say Baikal today shows what the seaboards of North America, Africa and Europe looked like as they began to separate millions of years ago. It is estimated that Lake Baikal formed somewhere 20-25 million years ago, during the Mesozoic.

The lake freezes over for half the year, creating clear, turquoise shards of ice.

Solstice Sun at Lulworth Cove

Solstice Sun at Lulworth Cove
A southern exposure and striking symmetry made Lulworth Cove, along the Jurassic Coast of England, planet Earth a beautiful setting during this December's Solstice. Five frames in this dramatic composite view follow the lowest arc of the Sun, from sunrise to sunset, during the shortest day of the year.

The solstice arc spans about 103 degrees at this northern latitude. Of course, erosion by wave action has produced the cove's remarkable shape in the coastal limestone layers. The cove's narrow entrance is responsible, creating a circular wave diffraction pattern made clearer by a low sun angle.

SeaBin

SeaBin
Two Australian surfers have quit their jobs and come up with a brilliant solution to combat the millions of tons of trash in our oceans.
They came up with an automated rubbish bin for marina docks called the Seabin that many hope could help reduce ocean pollution.

Built from recycled materials, the Seabin is fixed to a dock with water pump running on shore power.
The pump creates a flow of water that sucks all floating rubbish and debris into a natural fiber bag, before pumping the water back out.

It catches everything floating from plastic bottles to paper, oils, fuel and detergent.

The Augmented Reality Sandbox originally developed by researchers at UC Davis lets users sculpt mountains, canyons and rivers, then fill them with water or even create erupting volcanoes. This version of the device at UCLA was built by Gary Glesener using off the shelf parts and good ol’ playground sand.

Any shape made in the sandbox is detected by an Xbox Kinect sensor and processed with open source software. It is then projected as a color-coded contour map onto the sand.

Laser Cleaning is a process that removes scale, oxides, dust and oil from materials.

Laser Cleaning is a process that removes scale, oxides, dust and oil from materials. Using a short-pulse laser, the surface is cleaned to the bare metal quickly and with minimal heat affect. It can be an in-line or batch process performed directly prior to a process that requires a clean, bare metal surface.

The advantages are:
* No solvents are used, so it is environmentally friendly and operators are not exposed to chemicals. (assuming nothing harmful is vaporized)
* It is relatively easy to automate, e.g., by using robots.
* The running costs are lower than dry media or Dry-ice blasting, although the capital investment costs are much higher.
* The process is gentler than abrasive techniques, e.g. carbon fibers within a composite material are not damaged.
* Heating of the target is minimal.

The sea sapphire is an ant-sized crustacean. Considered an anomaly to scientists due to their ability to blaze between brilliant shades of color and near-invisibility, scientists have discovered that their unique abilities are due to microscopic layers of crystal plates which are arranged in a honeycomb-like pattern in the skin cells of the copepods’ back, helping them to pull off the optical trick.

28th December is reserved to Muriel Siebert
“You create opportunities by performing, not complaining”
Ms. Siebert, known to all as Mickie, cultivated the same brash attitude that characterized Wall Street’s most successful men. She bought her seat on the exchange on 28th December, 1967 but to her immense anger she remained the only woman admitted to membership for almost a decade.

A pioneer in the discount brokerage field, Ms. Siebert transformed Muriel Siebert & Company into a discount brokerage in 1975, on the first day that Big Board members were allowed to negotiate commissions.

She also was the first woman to be superintendent of banking for New York State, appointed by Gov. Hugh L. Carey in 1977. She served five years during a rocky time when banks were tottering and interest rates were skyrocketing.

Sharpless 308: Star Bubble

Sharpless 308: Star Bubble
Blown by fast winds from a hot, massive star, this cosmic bubble is huge. Cataloged as Sharpless 2-308 it lies some 5,200 light-years away toward the constellation of the Big Dog (Canis Major) and covers slightly more of the sky than a Full Moon. That corresponds to a diameter of 60 light-years at its estimated distance.

The massive star that created the bubble, a Wolf-Rayet star, is the bright one near the center of the nebula. Wolf-Rayet stars have over 20 times the mass of the Sun and are thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova phase of massive star evolution. Fast winds from this Wolf-Rayet star create the bubble-shaped nebula as they sweep up slower moving material from an earlier phase of evolution.

The windblown nebula has an age of about 70,000 years. Relatively faint emission captured in the expansive image is dominated by the glow of ionized oxygen atoms mapped to violet hues.

I am glad that it is old and big.

I am glad that it is old and big. I myself am of an old family, and to live in a new house would kill me. A house cannot be made habitable in a day; and, after all, how few days go to make up a century. I rejoice also that there is a chapel of old times. We Transylvanian nobles love not to think that our bones may be among the common dead.  I am no longer young; and my heart, through wearing years of mourning over the dead, is not attuned to mirth. Moreover, the walls of my castle are broken; the shadows are many, and the wind breathes cold through the broken battlements and casements. I love the shade and the shadow, and would be alone with my thoughts when I may.

Christmas Pluto

Christmas Pluto
Pluto gets into the holiday spirit, decked out in red and green. This image was produced by the New Horizons composition team, using a pair of Ralph/LEISA instrument scans obtained at approximately 9:40 AM on July 14, from a mean range of 67,000 miles (108,000 kilometers).

The resolution is about 7 kilometers per LEISA pixel. Three infrared wavelength ranges (2.28-2.23, 1.25-1.30 and 1.64-1.73 microns) were placed into the three color channels (red, green and blue, respectively) to create this false color Christmas portrait.

On December 21st, 1898 the Curies discover radium but they announce the isolation of radium on the 26th December, 1898.
Following on Becquerel, the Curies succeeded in isolating element 84, polonium (named for Poland, the country of Marie’s birth), and then element 88, radium. It was Marie, in particular, who devised a method for separating radium from its radioactive residues, making possible the closer study of its therapeutic properties. This would remain a lifelong interest of hers.

Southern Craters and Galaxies

Southern Craters and Galaxies
The Henbury craters in the Northern Territory, Australia, planet Earth, are the scars of an impact over 4,000 years old. When an ancient meteorite fragmented into dozens of pieces, the largest made the 180 meter diameter crater whose weathered walls and floor are lit in the foreground of this southern hemisphere nightscape.

The vertical panoramic view follows our magnificent Milky Way galaxy stretching above horizon, its rich central starfields cut by obscuring dust clouds. A glance along the galactic plane also reveals Alpha and Beta Centauri and the stars of the Southern Cross.

Captured in the region's spectacular, dark skies, the Small Magellanic Cloud, satellite of the Milky Way, is the bright galaxy to the left. Not the lights of a nearby town, the visible glow on the horizon below it is the Large Magellanic Cloud rising.

Phobos 360

Phobos 360
What does the Martian moon Phobos look like? To better visualize this unusual object, images from ESA's Mars Express orbiter have been combined into a virtual rotation movie. The rotation is actually a digital illusion -- tidally-locked Phobos always keeps the same face toward its home planet, as does Earth's moon.

The animation highlights Phobos' chunky shape and an unusually dark surface covered with craters and grooves. What lies beneath the surface is a topic of research since the moon is not dense enough to be filled with solid rock. Phobos is losing about of centimeter of altitude a year and is expected to break up and crash onto Mars within the next 50 million years.

Asp Caterpillars (Megalopyge opercularis) have a variety of nicknames: southern flannel moth, puss caterpillar, and the tree asp. They are considered the most highly venomous caterpillars in North America. The “hairs” of these caterpillars can break off and cause itching, but also hide an unpleasant surprise: sharp spines. The spines are connected to venom gland cells, and function like little hypodermic needles. The pain from injected venom is said to be intense, and lasts at least 12 hours.

A cup of coffee in the morning may pack more than just an energy boost

A cup of coffee in the morning may pack more than just an energy boost
More and more research is emerging to suggest that there may be several health benefits associated with drinking this dark black beverage, from helping prevent diabetes to lowering the risk of liver disease.

The consumption of coffee goes back centuries.
In 17th century England the popularity of the drink gave rise to a number of coffee houses which were dubbed 'penny universities', because with one penny a person could buy a cup of coffee and have intellectually stimulating conversations with other people.

Nowadays, with over 400 billion cups consumed every year, coffee is one of the world's most popular drinks. But what makes it special?

The potential health benefits associated with drinking coffee include: protecting against type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, liver cancer, and promoting a healthy heart.

Space Debris 1957-2015

Space Debris 1957-2015
In 1956, there was no manmade junk in orbit around Earth. The launches of Sputnik 1 in 1957 and Explorer 1 in 1958 changed that. And every launch that has reached orbit since then has left behind some bits of junk. Stuart Grey of University College London has created an animation of the accumulation of all of the tracked space debris, which now nearly reaches 20 000 pieces.

Looks like we need a vacuum for all the junk we've left behind or we could think of it as a very slow building progress for an anti-meteor shield ;)

Why Kids Stop Believing in Santa at Age 8

Why Kids Stop Believing in Santa at Age 8
It is no coincidence that most Santa-believing children lose their faith in the jolly bearded fellow at around age 8 or 9, finds a recent study that explains why this period marks an important shift in human development.

Kids at this time usually improve their conceptual abilities, developing a better understanding of underlying causes behind physical realities and the information that they receive. The period also marks the birth of skepticism, helping to explain why so many of us feel a loss of innocence and unquestioning joy at this time. Often the word “magic” is later used to describe the lost phase.

Smart Capsule

Smart Capsule
A tiny medication capsule could be life-changing for some people.
Most medications are absorbed into the body through the stomach and small intestine before making it to the large intestine.

This is just fine for most people, but becomes a problem for people suffering from inflammatory bowel syndrome or Crohn’s disease – they need drugs that target the large intestine directly. Scientists at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana may have found a solution: A tiny smart pill that delivers drugs right where patients need it most.

Gibbous Europa

Gibbous Europa
Although the phase of this moon might appear familiar, the moon itself might not. In fact, this gibbous phase shows part of Jupiter's moon Europa. The robot spacecraft Galileo captured this image mosaic during its mission orbiting Jupiter from 1995 - 2003. Visible are plains of bright ice, cracks that run to the horizon, and dark patches that likely contain both ice and dirt.

Raised terrain is particularly apparent near the terminator, where it casts shadows. Europa is nearly the same size as Earth's Moon, but much smoother, showing few highlands or large impact craters. Evidence and images from the Galileo spacecraft, indicated that liquid oceans might exist below the icy surface. To test speculation that these seas hold life, ESA has started preliminary development of the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), a spacecraft proposed for launch around 2022 that would further explore Jupiter and in particular Europa.

Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope have uncovered new evidence that Europa, like Saturn's moon Enceladus, has ice venting from its surface.

A common face cream ingredient might help us live longer, study finds
Calorie restriction diets have previously been shown to slow down the ageing process, and strangely enough, a common ingredient in face creams appears to mimic these life-extending effects – and all without the pain of going hungry.

Researchers in the UK have found that allantoin, a chemical compound found in botanical extracts of the comfrey plant and an ingredient in many anti-ageing skin creams, can increase the lifespan of certain worms by more than 20 percent – comparable to the manner in which calorie restriction achieves the same effect.

Photograph of a pregnant uterus (womb) from a New Forest pony, approximately five months into the pregnancy.

The developing pony (fetus) is outside the uterus but remains attached by its membranes and umbilical cord. The bent back legs of the fetus are sticking out from the membranes (top right-hand side). The uterus has been cut open to reveal its vast blood supply, which is visible on the inner surface.

This historical specimen is from a cull animal that happened to be pregnant at the time. It is preserved in formalin in a Perspex container and was photographed in the Anatomy Museum of the Royal Veterinary College in London. The container measures 48 x 30 x 7 cm.

The First Predicted Supernova Image

The First Predicted Supernova Image
It's back. Never before has an observed supernova been predicted. The unique astronomical event occurred in the field of galaxy cluster MACS J1149.5+2223. Most bright spots in the featured image are galaxies in this cluster. The actual supernova, dubbed Supernova Refsdal, occurred just once far across the universe and well behind this massive galaxy cluster.

Gravity caused the cluster to act as a massive gravitational lens, splitting the image of Supernova Refsdal into multiple bright images. One of these images arrived at Earth about ten years ago, likely in the upper red circle, and was missed. Four more bright images peaked in April in the lowest red circle, spread around a massive galaxy in the cluster as the first Einstein Cross supernova. But there was more.

Analyses revealed that a sixth bright supernova image was likely still on its way to Earth and likely to arrive within the next year. Earlier this month -- right on schedule -- this sixth bright image was recovered, in the middle red circle, as predicted. Studying image sequences like this help humanity to understand how matter is distributed in galaxies and clusters, how fast the universe expands, and how massive stars explode.

Comparing Wavelenghts

Comparing Wavelenghts
This side by side rendering of the Sun at the same time in two different wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light helps to visualize the differing features visible in each wavelength (Dec. 10-11, 2015). Most prominently, we can see much finer strands of plasma looping above the surface in the 171 Angstrom wavelength (gold) than in the 304 Angstrom wavelength (red), which captures cooler plasma closer to the Sun's surface.

SDO observes the Sun in 10 different wavelengths with each one capturing somewhat different features at various temperatures and elevations above the Sun.
