Snoring in children can affect their health

Snoring in children can affect their health
Children commonly snore from time to time and that is often harmless. But children with frequent snoring and breathing problems during sleep have an increased risk of having trouble concentrating and learning difficulties.

A newly published study from Sahlgrenska Academy shows that many parents of children that snore are not aware of the possible risks associated with frequent snoring in children.

The most common reason for snoring in children are enlarged tonsils or adenoids. In these cases, snoring can often be cured or reduced with surgery.

The Gothenburg researchers’ advice is that children with severe recurrent snoring and sleep apnea should turn to a healthcare center for medical evaluation.

Today, February 29th, is a leap day - a relatively rare occurrence.

Today, February 29th, is a leap day - a relatively rare occurrence.
In 46 BC, Julius Caesar, created a calendar system that added one leap day every four years. Acting on advice by Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes, Caesar did this to make up for the fact that the Earth's year is slightly more than 365 days. In modern terms, the time it takes for the Earth to circle the Sun is slightly more than the time it takes for the Earth to rotate 365 times (with respect to the Sun -- actually we now know this takes about 365.24219 rotations).

So, if calendar years contained 365 days they would drift from the actual year by about 1 day every 4 years. Eventually July (named posthumously for Julius Caesar himself) would occur during the northern hemisphere winter! By adopting a leap year with an extra day every four years, the calendar year would drift much less.

This Julian Calendar system was used until the year 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII provided further fine-tuning when he added that leap days should not occur in years ending in "00", unless divisible by 400. This Gregorian Calendar system is the one in common use today.

Researchers demonstrate 'quantum surrealism'

Researchers demonstrate 'quantum surrealism'
New research demonstrates that particles at the quantum level can in fact be seen as behaving something like billiard balls rolling along a table, and not merely as the probabilistic smears that the standard interpretation of quantum mechanics suggests. But there's a catch - the tracks the particles follow do not always behave as one would expect from "realistic" trajectories, but often in a fashion that has been termed "surrealistic."

Scientists discover that removing a gene in early stages of life could "reverse" symptoms of autism.

Scientists discover that removing a gene in early stages of life could "reverse" symptoms of autism. Can the same be done for human patients with autism?
Autism has diverse genetic causes, most of which are still unknown. About 1 percent of people with autism are missing a gene called Shank3, which is critical for brain development. Without this gene, individuals develop typical autism symptoms including repetitive behavior and avoidance of social interactions.

In a study of mice, MIT researchers have now shown that they can reverse some of those behavioral symptoms by turning the gene back on later in life, allowing the brain to properly rewire itself.

“This suggests that even in the adult brain we have profound plasticity to some degree,” says Guoping Feng, an MIT professor of brain and cognitive sciences. “There is more and more evidence showing that some of the defects are indeed reversible, giving hope that we can develop treatment for autistic patients in the future.”

Could machines have become self-aware without our knowing it?

Could machines have become self-aware without our knowing it?
Computer scientists, philosophers, and science fiction writers have thought a lot about the creation of machines with artificial intelligence. George Musser puts a new spin on that issue: Would we even recognize AI if we achieved it? "The huge obstacle to addressing such questions," he writes, "is that no one is really sure what consciousness is, let alone whether we’d know it if we saw it." Musser walks readers through several attempts to classify levels of consciousness, so that we're not caught unawares when machines become aware.

Rosy Maple Moth - Dryocampa rubicunda

Rosy Maple Moth - Dryocampa rubicunda
Adults emerge in the late afternoon and mate in the late evening. Females begin laying eggs at dusk the next day in groups of 10-30 on leaves of the host plant. Eggs hatch in about 2 weeks and feed gregariously when young. Older caterpillars feed alone. Fully-grown caterpillars pupate and overwinter in shallow underground chambers.

Extremely variable in color. Upperside of wing is yellow to cream to white with pink at the margins and bases of the wings. The amount of pink can vary from covering most of the wing to being absent altogether.

Robot Hand As Good As the Real Thing: Next Step Human Skin and Tendons

Robot Hand As Good As the Real Thing: Next Step Human Skin and Tendons
Researchers created a robot hand that is so accurate it has almost the same dexterity as a human hand.
That alone is enough to improve the motion capabilities in prosthetics in a way that has never been seen before. But the researchers plan on taking the project even farther by growing human tendon and tissue on the robot hand.

That would mean people could have an entirely new hand, human skin and all, if their hand were to be lost in an accident.

World’s largest concentrated solar plant switches on in the Sahara

World’s largest concentrated solar plant switches on in the Sahara
Morocco has switched on what will be the world’s largest concentrated solar power plant.
The new site near the city of Ouarzazate could produce enough energy to power over one million homes by 2018 and reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 760,000 tons per year, according to the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) finance group.

The solar plant, called the Noor complex, uses concentrating solar power (CSP) which is more expensive to install than the widely used photovoltaic panels, but unlike them, enables the storage of energy for nights and cloudy days.

Mirrors focus the sun’s light and heat up a liquid, which, when mixed with water, reaches around 400 degree Celsius. The steam produced from this process drives a turbine and generates electrical power.

A cylinder full of salt is melted by the warmth from the mirrors during the day, and stays hot enough at night to provide up to three hours of power, according to World Bank, who partially financed construction of the plant through a $97 million loan from the Clean Technology Fund.

Solar Magnetic Arcade

Solar Magnetic Arcade
On July 14th, 2000 - solar active region 9077 (AR9077) produced a massive flare. The event also blasted an enormous cloud of energetic charged particles toward planet Earth, triggering magnetic storms and dramatic auroral displays. This striking close-up of AR9077 was made by the orbiting TRACE satellite shortly after the flare erupted. It shows million degree hot solar plasma cooling down while suspended in an arcade of magnetic loops.

The false-color image covers an expansive 230,000 by 170,000 kilometer area on the Sun's surface (Earth's diameter is about 12,800 kilometers) and was recorded in extreme ultraviolet light. Collectively resembling a popular "slinky" toy, the enormous loops are actually magnetic field lines which trap the glowing, cooling plasma above the relatively dark solar surface. After the flare, AR9077's activity decayed as it was carried farther across the Earth-facing hemisphere of the Sun by solar rotation. Active regions like AR9077 appear as groups of dark sunspots in visible light.

The Tarantula Nebula is more than a thousand light-years in diameter, a giant star forming region within nearby satellite galaxy the Large Magellanic Cloud, about 180 thousand light-years away. The largest, most violent star forming region known in the whole Local Group of galaxies, the cosmic arachnid sprawls across this spectacular composite view constructed with space- and ground-based image data.

Within the Tarantula (NGC 2070), intense radiation, stellar winds and supernova shocks from the central young cluster of massive stars, cataloged as R136, energize the nebular glow and shape the spidery filaments. Around the Tarantula are other star forming regions with young star clusters, filaments, and blown-out bubble-shaped clouds.

In fact, the frame includes the site of the closest supernova in modern times, SN 1987A, at the lower right. The rich field of view spans about 1 degree or 2 full moons, in the southern constellation Dorado. But were the Tarantula Nebula closer, say 1,500 light-years distant like the local star forming Orion Nebula, it would take up half the sky.

Scientists 3D printed a functioning liver

Scientists 3D printed a functioning liver
Using 3-D bioprinting technology, engineers at UC San Diego have created a tissue that closely mimics the human liver’s sophisticated structure and function.

While 3-D printed livers are not yet viable for human transplant, they could be used for patient-specific drug screening and disease modeling.

Researchers say this advancement will save pharmaceutical companies time and money by allowing them to conduct drug safety and efficacy pilot studies immediately. Additionally, there are certain diseases or drugs that cannot be safely tested on humans (e.g., nerve agents or super bugs), and 3-D printed human tissue offers the only alternative.

3-D printed livers can also be useful for reproducing diseased liver models, which will be invaluable for studying how diseases like cancer or hepatitis affect the liver as well as for testing the efficacy of drug therapies.

24 February is reserved to Steve Jobs
Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you, and you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, California. Jobs' famous persuasive power was equalled by his creativity and business brilliance -- apparent in legendary hardware and software achievements across three decades of work.

The Macintosh computer (which brought the mouse-driven, graphical user interface to prominence), Pixar Animation Studios (which produced Toy Story, the first fully-3D-animated feature film), the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad all owe credit to Jobs' leadership and invention.

Although hated by many... the truth is, most of us like living in Jobs' reality, where exquisite design and sheer utility make for some addictively usable tools.

The male ruby-throated hummingbird does indeed have a striking red throat, though the female of the species does not.

The male ruby-throated hummingbird does indeed have a striking red throat, though the female of the species does not.
Ruby-throated hummingbirds live in woodland areas, but also frequent gardens where flowering plants are plentiful. They hover to feed on flowers, nectar, and sap. During this floral feeding process, the birds pollinate many plants.

These tiny birds are omnivores, sometimes feeding on insects and spiders. An adult ruby-throated hummingbird may eat twice its body weight in food each day, which it burns up with the high metabolism necessary to sustain its rapid wing beat and energetic movements.

Males establish a territory and court females who enter it with flying and diving behaviors, and by showing off their red throat plumage. Females provide all care for young hummingbirds. They lay one to three eggs, incubate them for about two weeks, and, after hatching, feed their young for about three weeks. A female may have several broods in a year. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are largely solitary outside of the breeding season.

Yuri's Planet

Yuri's Planet
On April 12th, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alexseyevich Gagarin became the first human in space. His remotely controlled Vostok 1 spacecraft lofted him to an altitude of 200 miles and carried him once around planet Earth.

Commenting on the first view from space he reported, "The sky is very dark; the Earth is bluish. Everything is seen very clearly"

Alan Shepard, the first US astronaut, would not be launched until almost a month later and then on a comparatively short suborbital flight.

Born on March 9, 1934, Gagarin was a military pilot before being chosen for the first group of cosmonauts in 1960. As a result of his historic flight he became an international hero and legend. Killed when his MIG jet crashed during a training flight on March 27, 1968, Gagarin was given a hero's funeral, his ashes interred in the Kremlin Wall. On yet another April 12th, in 1981, NASA launched the first space shuttle.

Space Station Research: Cardiovascular Health

Space Station Research: Cardiovascular Health
Like bones and muscle, the cardiovascular system deconditions (gets weaker) in microgravity. Long-duration spaceflight may increase the risk of damage and inflammation in the cardiovascular system primarily from radiation, but also from psychological stress, reduced physical activity, diminished nutritional standards and, in the case of extravehicular activity, increased oxygen exposure.

Even brief periods of exposure to reduced-gravity environments can result in cardiovascular changes such as fluid shifts, changes in total blood volume, heartbeat and heart rhythm irregularities and diminished aerobic capacity.

The weightless environment of space also causes fluid shifts to occur in the body. This normal shift of fluids to the upper body in space causes increased inter-cranial pressure which could be reducing visual capacity in astronauts. NASA is testing how this can be counteracted by returning fluids to the lower body using a “lower body negative pressure” suit, also known as Chibis.

Spaceflight also accelerates the aging process, and it is important to understand this process to develop specific countermeasures. Developing countermeasures to keep astronauts’ hearts healthy in space is applicable to heart health on Earth, too!

How Stress Affects the Brain?

How Stress Affects the Brain?
Are you sleeping restlessly, feeling irritable or moody, forgetting little things, and feeling overwhelmed and isolated? Don’t worry. We’ve all been there. You’re probably just stressed out. Stress isn’t always a bad thing. It can be handy for a burst of extra energy and focus, like when you’re playing a competitive sport, or have to speak in public. But when its continuous, the kind most of us face day in and day out, it actually begins to change your brain. Chronic stress, like being overworked or having arguments at home, can affect brain size, its structure, and how it functions, right down to the level of your genes.

Stress begins with something called the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal axis, series of interactions between endocrine glands in the brain and on the kidney, which controls your body’s reaction to stress. When your brain detects a stressful situation, your HPA axis is instantly activated and releases a hormone called cortisol, which primes your body for instant action. But high levels of cortisol over long periods of time wreak havoc on your brain. For example, chronic stress increases the activity level and number of neural connections in the amygdala, your brain’s fear center. And as levels of cortisol rise, electric signals in your hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with learning, memories, and stress control, deteriorate.

The hippocampus also inhibits the activity of the HPA axis, so when it weakens, so does your ability to control your stress. That’s not all, though. Cortisol can literally cause your brain to shrink in size.

Too much of it results in the loss of synaptic connections between neurons and the shrinking of your prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain the regulates behaviors like concentration, decision-making, judgement, and social interaction. It also leads to fewer new brain cells being made in the hippocampus. This means chronic stress might make it harder for you to learn and remember things, and also set the stage for more serious mental problems, like depression and eventually Alzheimer’s disease.

It’s not all bad news, though. There are many ways to reverse what cortisol does to your stressed brain. The most powerful weapons are exercise and meditation, which involves breathing deeply and being aware and focused on your surroundings. Both of these activities decrease your stress and increase the size of the hippocampus, thereby improving your memory.

22 February is reserved to Heinrich Hertz
On this day in 1857 Heinrich Hertz was born in Hamburg, Germany. In the 1880s he performed experiments that confirmed James Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism. Hertz generated what are now called radio waves and showed that they behave just like heat and visible light—they are all varieties of electromagnetic radiation. The hertz (Hz) is now a unit of measurement denoting the frequency, or number of cycles per second, of light and sound waves, computer processors, and more.

Urgently we request to stop the all of palm oil developments in the peatlands, at least making Moratorium of new all developments soon! Must stop the fires!

To Fly Free in Space

To Fly Free in Space
At about 100 meters from the cargo bay of the space shuttle Challenger, Bruce McCandless II was farther out than anyone had ever been before. Guided by a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), astronaut McCandless, pictured bellow, was floating free in space.

McCandless and fellow NASA astronaut Robert Stewart were the first to experience such an "untethered space walk" during Space Shuttle mission 41-B in 1984. The MMU works by shooting jets of nitrogen and has since been used to help deploy and retrieve satellites. With a mass over 140 kilograms, an MMU is heavy on Earth, but, like everything, is weightless when drifting in orbit. The MMU was replaced with the SAFER backpack propulsion unit.

Neurobiological Changes Explain How Mindfulness Meditation Improves Health

Neurobiological Changes Explain How Mindfulness Meditation Improves Health
Over the past decade, mindfulness meditation has been shown to improve a broad range of health and disease outcomes, such as slowing HIV progression and improving healthy aging. Yet, little is known about the brain changes that produce these beneficial health effects.

New research from Carnegie Mellon University provides a window into the brain changes that link mindfulness meditation training with health in stressed adults. Published in Biological Psychiatry, the study shows that mindfulness meditation training, compared to relaxation training, reduces Interleukin-6, an inflammatory health biomarker, in high-stress, unemployed adults.

The biological health-related benefits occur because mindfulness meditation training fundamentally alters brain network functional connectivity patterns and the brain changes statistically explain the improvements in inflammation.

Perspective - It’s the Earth that’s moving, space is standing still

Perspective - It’s the Earth that’s moving, space is standing still
The Earth takes roughly 24 hours to spin on its axis, moving from east to west. But, do stars move?

If you watch the sky over a few hours in most locations on Earth, you can see the same thing happening: stars rising in the east, and setting in the west. There are some exceptions to this rule, however:

Stars that are close to the Earth’s axis of rotation — what we call the north and the south pole — rotate around the poles. If the pole’s location is far enough above the horizon, some stars never set. They just keep spinning.

If your geographical location happens to be close to the pole, most stars will be rotating around the pole and very few will rise and set. (And in a trick of geometry, it will be hard to see the Sun, moon and planets since their path in the sky is at 23.5 degrees — the same as Earth’s tilt. This is why the poles have months of darkness, because the Sun doesn’t always shine there.)

Mushrooms - what are they?

Mushrooms - what are they?
This timelapse shows the surprising power of mushroom buds, as they burst through the soil and elegantly expand their caps. What we see on the surface, though, is only a part of organism, called mushroom fruit. The fruit is a short-lived reproductive structure, consisting 92% of water . Meanwhile, mycelium of the mushroom sits and sprouts from the soil. This part, in contrast to the fruit, can live for years.

Mushrooms are a fungus, and unlike plants, mushrooms do not require sunlight to make energy for themselves.

The El Nino show trend!

The El Nino show trend! Still El Nino is strong, before strong El Nino by 1997-98 was slow down December! But making Monster El Nino since last July to February don't take slowly down, still strongly! So this El Nino will end on first Summer, June! Maybe El Nino continue about 1 year more!
