If the people of Europe had known as much of astronomy and geology when the bible was introduced among them, as they do now, there never could have been one believer in the doctrine of inspiration. If the writers of the various parts of the bible had known as much about the sciences as is now known by every intelligent man, the book never could have been written. It was produced by ignorance, and has been believed and defended by its author. It has lost power in the proportion that man has gained knowledge. A few years ago, this book was appealed to in the settlement of all scientific questions; but now, even the clergy confess that in such matters, it has ceased to speak with the voice of authority. For the establishment of facts, the word of man is now considered far better than the word of God. In the world of science, Jehovah was superseded by Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. All that God told Moses, admitting the entire account to be true, is dust and ashes compared to the discoveries of Descartes, Laplace, and Humboldt. In matters of fact, the bible has ceased to be regarded as a standard. Science has succeeded in breaking the chains of theology. A few years ago, Science endeavored to show that it was not inconsistent with the bible. The tables have been turned, and now, Religion is endeavoring to prove that the bible is not inconsistent with Science. The standard has been changed.

  2. Ummmm...I won't debate over this since everyone has a brain to wrap around the subject.
The words of Robert G. Ingersoll have a meaning to me and will stay...as for the history of religion that's a different topic. Actually Augustine belonged to the Manichean religion before his conversion to Christianity... so I can digest his ideas as a philosopher, no more no less.
When it comes to religious dogma, well screw that! As for the science Vs religion that's a long stretch.

  3. These words are not part of a peer reviewed article David Hallowell . These words are just the raw-vomited thoughts of an agnostic person. These words show me how a man back then was questioning religious words and writings. Perhaps his thoughts were not that accurate...but how accurate is the bible? How accurate are many of the other religious writings?  How accurate is your pagan saint?
In what way does religion influence culture, society and how that changed/s people?
What can history teach us about religion and science? While I do like your intellectual thoughts...I'll pull my cortex and try to avoid your spiritual side.

  5. Science may have broken the chains of theology.... As long as we agree that theology is man's attempt to explain who God is, essentially by democratic process.

  6. Corina Marinescu Robert G. Ingersoll is in error, his mistake is to compare the Science with the Holy Bible, which is why He loser! the Holy Bible is a way of life, The Holy Bible teaches love for one God, and for men (collaboration used by those who live in society), the Holy Bible teaches us that we are on earth only in passing, and that we must use this time to learn (through his works) to love and serve God (respecting nature and other human beings). the Bible was not written for scientists but to be understood by all men. Talking about inaccuracies I remember to you that if you saw (roots Kunta Kinte) that in old days there were no books, but oral tradition. https://it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radici_(romanzo) do memory error was highly probable.

Do not push my buttons....I don't have anymore patience on this subject. I don't believe in holy bibles, god's, angels etc.
What you believe in and how you and other people choose to live your life is not my concern.
If you get retina rash by reading what Ingersoll wrote, don't read. Simple like that!

  8. It just shows the bible has been written by men. Maybe "dictated, not read".

  9. Corina Marinescu You're smart enough to know that evolution does not end, it never ends! It is therefore logical to think that the ultimate evolution is God. Faith is not imposed, faith arises, faith is applying the logic and intelligence! I read your post and I have not found at all unseemly, just ask those who do not believe: use me the same courtesy try to read a page of the Bible daily, if after a week you will not feel the desire to read it all, it will mean that God does not exist for you. A kisses for a beautiful couple!😘

  11. Piero Filippin That Corina has responded heavily not means that between us there is hatred, there is indeed a lot of respect, because we're friends!

  14. Vincenzo Sicari just no. You are free to believe what you want, for me it is just a book and not even a good one.

  15. Piero Filippin Do you think there is Satan? Yes or Not? :)

  16. Vincenzo Sicari no. The universe works perfectly fine without the need of supernatural beings.

  17. Piero Filippin Hahahaha Lo sapevo sei un ingenuo! Pensi addirittura di conoscere come è nato e come funziona l'universo! Lol

  18. Vincenzo Sicari never claimed I do. However, if you are claiming a supernatural being had anything to do with it you are sadly just getting into a circular argument. Who created the supernatural being?

  19. Piero Filippin The evolution! The same evolution that gave rise to humans.Humans have in fact have the same Divine nature. And if power reach the maximum of evolution, the next step is the Big Bang, God is in all things, God is at all times, and being God, he is Able to give birth to himself (transformation cyclic and infinite, God is eternal, God has no beginning and no end). When part of our body is damaged, we try to fix it, but if we can not then we abandon it to his fate.
