Could machines have become self-aware without our knowing it?
Computer scientists, philosophers, and science fiction writers have thought a lot about the creation of machines with artificial intelligence. George Musser puts a new spin on that issue: Would we even recognize AI if we achieved it? "The huge obstacle to addressing such questions," he writes, "is that no one is really sure what consciousness is, let alone whether we’d know it if we saw it." Musser walks readers through several attempts to classify levels of consciousness, so that we're not caught unawares when machines become aware.

What is life, what is intelligence, what is conscious/sentience? Words we use to try to explain what we don't know. Perhaps the Earth, the solar system, the Universe is 'alive' and we are but molecules, cogs, biological programmes in a larger entity we cannot ever comprehend
ReplyDeleteEspecially printers was moody from the begining.
ReplyDeleteBlessed be the unknown...
ReplyDeleteI am not 100% sure I'm self-aware, and I must concentrate to believe my fellow humans may be:) Now, machines...
ReplyDeleteIf we teach ourselves as humans to access our kinder sides, to be respectful and courteous even when we aren't feeling affection, to extend a little tolerance to all, we won't have a problem with AI becoming sentient because it won't hate us. I think the Boston Dynamics robots understand that the "abuse" is testing for the systems. Plenty of accidents could cause them the same falls and impacts and they're being prepped for that. But sheer abuse, that causes problems in any being, human, animal, or one day, AI.
ReplyDeletequite a question !
ReplyDeleteMaybe they became self aware without them themselves knowing it...
ReplyDeleteself-aware except for not being aware of it, now this could happen, say, if you are acutely aware of something except for not yet having recognized it as yourself!

If a machine is capable of self to program, and is able to access its data in memory, and is also able to explore and interact with its environment (input / output), then it will also be able to answer the questions: Who am I?, what have I done yesterday ?, processing of these simple questions will allow it to complete the day today! A machine with these characteristics has a conscience. Ultimately, we can say that consciousness grows following the progress of intelligence!
