Liquid nitrogen is made of two nitrogen atoms bonded into a molecule, just like the nitrogen in the air. The only difference is that it is a liquid instead of a gas because it's kept colder than its boiling point — the temperature at which liquid turns into a gas.
Nitrogen is non-toxic, odorless, and colorless. It is relatively inert. It is not flammable.
Pouring small amount of liquid nitrogen into your hand won’t hurt, as long as you get a few seconds of recovery time between pours.
Please don’t try this at home!!

Good for minor surgery operations, lumps, bumps, lesions. Supercool...
ReplyDeleteHaving played with it in my step dad's lab, I would never immerse my hands in it! Our favourite experiment was catching a cockroach in the lab and giving the poor little feller a bath. We then threw out the baby with the bath water and he broke into two pieces. Then the confused cockroach unfroze and woke up. I found liquid nitrogen is excellent pest control.
ReplyDeleteDon't try this at home!
ReplyDeleteI've gotten cold burns from liquid nitrogen. This seems overly stupid imho.
ReplyDeleteIf you are fast the leidenfrost effect will protect you, but I have seen colleagues hurt by liquid nitrogen when they took it for granted and were overconfident.

ReplyDeleteProfessor who used to demo hand-in-molten-lead (as Mythbusters did), and liquid-nitrogen-in-mouth, until one day, he "thermally contracted" two of his front teeth, which sounds like they cracked.
Probably a more dangerous stunt than firebreathing and something no one should try.
I work with a hideously dangerous refrigeration environment at DHS regulated levels... 35,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia to be exact. I signed up for the position after it nearly took the supervisor's life when a large valve broke in front of him and covered him. I had experience with ammonia disasters and cleanup, so I felt comfortable with the position. But I'm very strict with safety as I have seen just about everything that can go wrong, even with liquid oxygen. This stuff can take out an entire town...
ReplyDeleteOh look! Liquid air!
ReplyDeleteI want to try this at home, but the local supermarket doesn't sell the stuff. Does Walmart sell LN?
Captain Jack you can get it at any welding supply store. But they may want to see licenses, certifications, and approved containers as they don't want it blowing up...
ReplyDeleteduane a I was just joking. Praxair sells it for $60 bucks to fill 10L Dewar. They use to be located downtown in Fremont. Last year they moved across the river near where I use to keep my boat. I haven't been there since they moved.
ReplyDeleteYou sail in liquid nitrogen, Captain Jack,!?!
ReplyDeleteWhatever floats your boat...
Gizmo the Sane hahahah! I've thought of a way space aliens could take us out with one lit match. Just send a beam of energy the separates the ocean water into hydrogen and oxygen. Drop a lit match and watch it all recombine.
ReplyDeleteSuch a be would do enough damage without the need to blow up the atmosphere later . Interesting thought!
