Nobel scientist Tim Hunt think we are still in Victorian times

Nobel scientist Tim Hunt think we are still in Victorian times
Let me start with WTF?!?
Tim Hunt, an English biochemist who admitted that he has a reputation for being a “chauvinist”, said to the World Conference of Science Journalists in Seoul, South Korea: “Let me tell you about my trouble with girls…three things happen when they are in the lab...You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticize them, they cry.”

Hunt said he was in favor of single-sex labs, adding that he didn’t want to “stand in the way of women”.

The 72-year-old, who won the 2001 Nobel prize in physiology or medicine, made the remarks when addressing a convention of senior female scientists and science journalists.

Honestly I have never heard such idiotic comments so far...so you win the Nobel prize for idiocy, which really shows that high academic achievements don’t equate to actual intelligence.

  2. He resigned from UCL. Wait 'til he starts blaming the womenz about that.

  3. hold up. When did professor's opinions and personal experience become fireable offenses? Though i don't know the entire context, i do know that were I to share an intellectual adventure with a mind i admired i'd likely fall in love. And, were I to criticize a loved one, they'd cry. So, i'm not sure this is non-obvious.

Surely, the venue was probably a poor choice. But, i wouldn't blame a nobel laureate in science for his lack of social skills/tact...

  4. Jeffrey Kane tenured professors may have tenure, but the murder rate is high...

  5. duane a tenure is irrelevant. It's an opinion and a reflection on experience. It's not like he's calling women unintelligent, or knocking their skills in the lab. He's just speaking to (rather simple) human truths and their continuation into the lab.

Sex is distracting! Does sexual appeal belong when focus is required?

  6. Imagine if a woman made the same statement about boys. I can't imagine his wife was too thrilled to hear this go public.

  7. Some people are lucky to find love two or three times in their lifetime. Not this dude. It must be physiological. Lol

  8. I think, if anything, love is actually be empowering and enables you to achieve even more than you would alone. Far deeper than just physical attraction

  9. What I see is a socially immature male that has devoted more time in his work than building social skills. This is quite common occurrence. They even made a movie about this condition. Just watch the movie Real Genius for an example of people who are very smart in sciences but lack social skills. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089886/)

It it just me, or do I see shrubbery growing out of his nose? The Knights of Ni might be interested in acquiring those disgusting nose hairs. Even I'm creeped out over those shrubs. eeeewwwww!

  10. I simply cannot take serious the comments of anyone, Nobel prize winner or not, who has bushes of hair on display hanging like tumbleweeds from their nostrils…

  11. Good humored response here, especially the improvised health and safety signage! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-33099289
