16 August is reserved to Gabriel Lippmann
Today is the birthday of Gabriel Lippmann, who was born in 1845 in Hollerich, Luxembourg. Lippmann won the physics Nobel in 1908 for inventing an interference-based method of color photography. Lippmann's method was superseded by others. But Lippmann made many other contributions to physics and photography.
He invented the coleostat, which accounted for Earth's rotation so that astronomers could take sharp long-exposure photos of the sky. Lippmann also proposed and demonstrated integral imaging, in which a two-dimensional array of tiny lenses creates a 3D image.
