Engines - V in-line

Engines - V in-line
Now, this is the sort of the engine that you find on sports cars like the Ferrari. When you hear sports enthusiasts go ‘ Whoa, that’s a V-12! ‘ - it just means that the engine has a V-type arrangement with 12 cylinders.

Vvvvvvvvvvvvvvummmmmm it, baby!!

  1. Have you heard of the W-type arrangement?
The 6.0-liter W12 is a compact engine arrangement used in the Volkswagen / Audi AG vehicles, A8, (prev. Bentley) Phaeton, and Continental GT and GTC.
The "double-vee" arrangement allows for a small overall size in comparison with a tradition V- or Flat 12 engine. This engine made its debut in 1997 Volkswagen W12 Nardo concept supercar at the Tokyo Motor Show. The arrangement is also used in the 4.0-liter W8 used in the 2004-2006 Volkswagen Passat and the 8.0-liter W16 of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4.

  2. Bertrand Nelson: VW also makes a VR engine, that's a V-engine with a single head covering both lines of cylinders, because they're so close to each other. Weird-looking engine. vr6parts.com - vr6parts.com/onlinestore/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/d/s/dscn91741_resize_4.jpg

  3. John Bump seems like that would be a very well balanced engine. I wonder if the intake is straight on top.. now I have to read about this..

  5. Michael Kendall: tricky intake/exhaust because VW wanted to use side entrance rather than the top entrance of most V's for better hood clearance, so the intakes and exhausts are different lengths between cylinders.
