What you seek is seeking you, or not?

What you seek is seeking you, or not?
Stephen Hawking is confident that we're not alone in the universe, but he also believes we should not advertise our presence. Other scientists say that although it's valid to ask whether it's a good idea to transmit messages through space, there's no reason to assume alien civilizations would be hostile. You can watch Hawking explain his views in a new online video.

  2. I'm with Hawking on this. It's better 'to discover' a weaker alien civilization, than 'be discovered' by a stronger alien civilization.
Let's keep our eyes peeled, and hang back in the shadows of the universe.
Look to our friends 'Big foot' and the 'Loch Ness monster' for inspiration and be .........discrete.

  3. They most likely have already discovered us. The post-atomic spike in activity and sightings among all walks of life, including the most qualified observers, and at nuclear facilities, seems to suggest this likelihood.

  4. stephen carter Don't forget, if we discover aliens with weak/similar tech as we have, then they will be either much more advanced then us or gone extinct.

Why? Simply because the vast distances in space. Lets say we do discover an alien species that broadcasts itself the same was as us. Now imagine they are 500 light years away. We would detect how they were broadcasting 500 years ago thus they would be far more advanced then we are now (if they did not destroy themselves that is).

Just for reference. We - humanity - 500 years ago were just getting clues that the earth wasn't flat, had not invented the steam engine yet (which was a few hundred years later) etc....

  6. È vero probabilmente non sono ostili, ma se c'è ne almeno uno ostile, siamo nei guai, perchè la nostra tecnologia non sarebbe minimamente in grado di competere.
