Optical Heartbeat For Better Diagnosis
The Optical Stethoscope is a nifty piece of technology that acts as assistive device for doctors. Through graphic representation on its knob, it shows doctors the heartbeat, or stomach fluid sounds in waveforms. Basic info like heart rate and pulse is displayed for faster comprehension. The basic idea behind the concept is to aid doctors in making faster and accurate diagnosis.
Medical students who are not yet familiar with the sound of internal organs, will find it easy to use this device, especially in an emergency situation.

An optical stethoscope. Sounds quite innovative. But it would really depend on just how it displays internal organ activity, really. The digital heart rate okay I get. But the wave form below it is an electrical activity. Heart phonograms look completely different and nobody is ever really taught how to interpret them. On the same note, sound wave interpretation of lung and abdominal organs? Doctors use experience to interpret organ sounds. Lungs are "crackling", "bubbling" etc. For this to become a mainstream investigative aid, sound wave interpretation would have to be added to the medical curriculum. That's a long ways to go. But definitely worth looking into. Fantastic post Corina Marinescu
ReplyDeleteMustafa Ayub are you a med student? based on your questions I assume you are =)
ReplyDeleteAnyways, you're right, we interpret organ sounds and experience is the key, I recommend ER and/or war zones for the experience part. However you should choose the first =)
Optical stethoscope allows us to get a graphic representation of stomach fluid or heartbeat sound, which means based on your "sound-experience" that the graphic is just an "echo of what you hear" - correlate the 2 for better diagnostic. To add even more assistance, the screen of this piece of tech displays pulse and heart rate in numbers.
In my opinion is a regular steth. with a fancy screen =)
