Daddy long legs

Daddy long legs
Opiliones are colloquially known by the name "daddy longlegs" or "granddaddy longlegs", but this name is also used for two other unrelated arthropods: the crane fly (Tipulidae) and the cellar spider (Pholcidae). They are also referred to as "shepherd spiders" in reference to how their unusually long legs reminded observers of the ways that some European shepherds used stilts to better observe their wandering flocks from distance.

  1. As a general rule, the granddaddy longlegs is the only spider I can take without great revulsion, but that's a bit excessive...

  4. Cool and creepy! Rumor is that these spiders are actually very poisonous but they can't break the skin making them harmless. Any truth to this?

  7. Not these ones John Cassone , these are the harvestman.  They're not poisonous,   they detach their legs, which keep on moving, to confuse predators..or vibrate their bodies, so shake it up =)

  8. Oh...I need to go to a "party" also. More like I have to show off and play piano for some humans. Or I could drink some champagne again and go to bed, hehe

  9. You guys are funny - bugs don't creep me out at all. (Except wasps and bees which do - prolly because I've been stung so many times.) I'm surprised bugs get to you Corina Marinescu because you post a fair number items about them and because you are well acquainted with and inured to gucky human innards etc. :)
You are destroying my image of a steely nerved, dark Dr Marinsecu (aka Corina Frankenstein).

  11. Dear Sean Walker  we are not talking about one bug here...that's an entire generation ;))
I could see them running everywhere ...ugh skin itchy. Do not forget those creeps are blind so they go in all the directions ...I'd still climb in a tree or something, haha

  14. Ummmm... I'm reading 'Strangers to ourselves: the adaptive unconscious'. This book is not going to put me to sleep.....more I'll start to analyze my amygdala and eat tiramisu, which would mean.. in the morning I'll have to abuse my body and go for a long run.
Ugh..I hate how everything is connected =)

  15. But you can hear the tiramisu calling you softly but passionately...

  16. ahaha! lol For some reason the image I saw initially was static and when I scrolled back to it I suddenly saw the pile of daddy longlegs go scrambling after the poke. Cool!  ;)

  17. Yes..I need to be saved from my tiramisu obsessed brain.

  18. Appreciating tiramisu is never dysfunctional, it's always about good taste. Also, your cheekbones strongly suggest that your good taste isn't impacting your waste line - so have at it!

  19. If you pull all the legs off except one, it will spin in a circle. At least the last time I checked many, many years ago.

  20. Jim Allen I believe that makes you a sadist. O_o

  21. Sean Walker I was an enthusiastic child willing to experiment, not sadistically but to save the planet from being taken over by grandaddy longlegs.
