Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto on February 18, 1930 when he was just 24 years old. While working at the the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, Tombaugh was assigned the job of using a new photographic telescope to look for an unknown celestial body that was throwing off the movements of both Neptune and Uranus.
On that February day, he identified a discrepancy in two images taken the previous month. It was a tiny orb, and it had moved positions. After studying the object, the scientists realized Planet X — Pluto — had been found.

I can imagine they are very excited at NASA now. All that data that they will be able to analyse and the higher resolution imagery. Quite an amazing achievement really
ReplyDeleteMy kids got a book from a library about this guy. A bit over their heads, but still a great story.
