A chemical found in anti-wrinkle cream may help reverse the effects of Parkinson's disease in certain inherited forms of the disorder. Scientists at the University of California San Francisco found that they could use a chemical called kinetin could increase the levels of kinases that then increase the activity of the PINK1 protein. Mutations in PINK1 cause malfunctions in the mitochondria (pink, pictured) and have been linked to Parkinson's Disease. The find, published in Cell, are important because they are one of the first times a chemical has been found to boost, rather than inhibit, kinase activity. Kinetin was also found to boost PINK1 levels in nerve cells that carried the normal version of the protein, hinting that this compound may also be useful in helping to treat the sporadic forms of the disease.
