Aurora and Unusual Clouds Over Iceland

Aurora and Unusual Clouds Over Iceland
What's happening in the sky? On this cold winter night in Iceland, quite a lot. First, in the foreground, lies the largest glacier in Iceland: Vatnajokull. On the far left, bright green auroras appear to emanate from the glacier as if it was a volcano. Aurora light is reflected by the foreground lake Jökulsárlón.

On the far right is a long and unusual lenticular cloud tinged with green light emitted from another aurora well behind it. Just above this lenticular cloud are unusual iridescent lenticular clouds displaying a broad spectral range of colors. Far beyond the lenticular is the setting Moon, while far beyond even the Moon are setting stars. This photo was captured in late March of 2012.

  2. Iceland is a wonderful community, incredible.  There is a new airline company opening offering 198 buck returns from Montreal and a 250 buck return on to Europe starting this May 16, 2016...what an opportunity to see Iceland !

  5. gordon hoselton Thank you for the information.
Is there a possibility to go to Iceland by ship?
    It should be.
BTW. I do not want to go too back in history but I have a feeling on perhaps in very old maps Iceland was ISLAND. That Greenland was ICELAND. And that Labrador was GREENLAND.
How nice would be to sail again the Vikings way.

  11. gordon hoselton The World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer probably had two very good reasons to chose Iceland  to live in.
The first one the bizarre beauty of a unique landscape of the world.
And the other one no lack of money at all. :-))

  16. I visited Iceland in Sept. 2015.  It's a gorgeous country with so many exciting adventures (snowmobiling on the glacier above, hiking to spectacular waterfalls, snorkeling "between continents" and so much more) that you will have the time of your life.  Unfortunately, the spectacular view above and the famed aurora borealis are infrequentl and may be fleeting at best.  I was surprised to learn that what we see with our eyes cannot compare with the long exposures captured by our cameras; we often had to look at the camera to be sure we had seen the glowing trails.  If you go, I strongly recommend setting up directly with Asdis Birgisdottir who is a driver/guide and trekking guide (www.extremeisland.is).  She is fluent in English, knows absolutely everything (from geology to government to cultural tics) that you would want to know about Iceland, and will negotiate on your behalf.  She does not know I am putting her name out there and I have absolutely nothing to gain by doing so.  By the way, don't take the taxis if you can help it because they appear to be unregulated and will find ways to charge 2x and 3x as much as originally quoted once you get near your destination.  There is a Flybus from the airport to Reykjavik for $20.  I hope everyone can get to go to this amazing place!
